Title: Back Together
Fandom: Getbackers
Rating: PG
Pairing: Hints of Ban/Ginji.
Summary: Set after the Get Back the Eternal Bond arc. Ginji isn't angry with Ban but he's kind of sad.

Ginji couldn’t sleep.

He often found it hard to sleep when he’d been channelling too much electricity and he’d been the Lightning Lord several times lately. It made him vaguely jittery. And everything that had been happening for the past few days was churning in his head which didn’t exactly help matters.

“Get lost. You’re useless.”

He swallowed. Even knowing why Ban-chan had said it, it still hurt. Ban-chan was the most important person in the world to him. He wasn’t supposed to say that Ginji was useless. They were friends. Friends that were always meant to be together. And even though it had all worked out okay, even though it had had a happy ending, he knew it would be a while before he forgot what Ban-chan had said to him,

Beside him, he suddenly heard Ban-chan shift in the darkness and then there was the familiar click of the lighter as Ban-chan lit his cigarette. Twisting his head, Ginji looked at his partner in the sudden faint burst of light. Ban-chan was concentrating hard on the cigarette, as though he didn’t know that Ginji was awake. He did though. Ban-chan always knew stuff like that.

“Hey,” Ginji said softly. “Ban-chan?”

“What?”

Ginji paused for a moment. Ban-chan was much better with words than Ginji was. He always found it easy to say anything he wanted to explain. Ginji didn’t exactly have problems with it but sometimes it seemed to get stuck when it came to Ban-chan.

“I’m not mad at you,” he said at last.

“Oh?”

Ban-chan’s voice was carefully neutral and Ginji felt himself squirm a little inside. If Ban-chan hadn’t been expecting Ginji to be mad at him, he’d have said it differently.

“It’s okay,” he said quickly. “I’m not mad. I know why you did it. You always do nice stuff in a mean way. So … I’m not mad.”

Ban-chan didn’t say anything. He played with his glowing cigarette, then abruptly stabbed it out on the ashtray that he kept between the seats.

“That’s not why I did it,” he said, his voice flat.

“Huh?” Ginji said lamely.

“You think I did it cause I wanted you to think for yourself,” Ban said. “Or cause I wanted you to get stronger or relax or to keep you out of danger. Well, maybe I did a bit. But that wasn’t it. Not all of it.”

“Then … why did you do it?” Ginji asked in a small voice.

“Cause I … had an idea. About what might be going down. Not much. Just an idea. That it wouldn’t go well. And you were powerless right then. And … I’d have killed him. If Monkey-Boy had got you killed, even indirectly, I’d have killed him. That fucking playboy asked what I’d do and that’s it. So. Told you to stay at home.”

Ginji wasn’t totally sure that Ban-chan’s story was very different from what he had said. But it mattered to Ban-chan and that meant it mattered to Ginji.

“Okay, Ban-chan,” he said. “Okay.”

Ban-chan gave a soft sigh and then reached out suddenly. His hand closed tightly around Ginji’s and he squeezed gently. Ginji squeezed back, suddenly feeling properly safe again. He thought about Madoka and Shido, cuddled up together somewhere. Maybe he and Ban-chan were a bit like that. Only Ban-chan found it easier to be happy about it in the dark.

“I wouldn’t leave you,” Ginji said. “Even if you had no powers.”

Ban-chan made a grumbling sort of noise, the kind of noise that he made when he felt Ginji was being sappy but secretly agreed and couldn’t say it. He was like that, Ginji thought. Kind of like Shido, actually. Not that Ginji would ever say that.

“Gin,” Ban whispered.

“Yeah?”

“Glad we’re back.”

Ginji grinned.

“Yeah.”
