151010 Health Fair

Today, Walmart is hosting a health fair. I love these things. Everyone loves to tell everyone else what to do to get healthier. Since infancy, I have had digestive problems related to cow's milk. People actually raise their voices and get red-faced when I tell them that I don't drink milk. They exclaim that my bones will crumble because I don't drink milk.

At age 54, I had my bone density checked. It was better than average for my race and age. Also, I show no signs of osteoarthritis. Calcium and its complimentary micro-nutrients occur in more foods than just milk. Broccoli, for instance, provides a lot of calcium, and it is more easily absorbed than that in milk. Even with my bones' evidence and actual scientific research, lay-people still lecture me about not drinking milk. This brainwashing of the masses has been complete.

Similar fusses occur when I mention that I have a gluten allergy. While the lactose intolerance was diagnosed by a standard physician, I diagnosed my own gluten allergy as a naturopathic healer. Yes, I've had training, but it is not recognized by the AMA, so I have to proclaim my amateur status. I know my body. I put myself on a special elimination diet, and my life-long eczema disappeared. My tummy upsets disappeared. My digestive distress disappeared. My brain-fog disappeared. I ate a slice of bread, and they all came back. Every time I strayed from the diet, symptoms returned. I found that almost every product that comes in a box or a can has either gluten or lactose or both in it. I cook everything from scratch!

In recent years, gluten-free products have appeared. Most are void of nutrition. Don't waste your money. A friend of mine thought she would be eating healthier food by going gluten-free, and bought only those products. After a couple of years, she went to the doctor to find out why she was so sick. Her feet swelled like balloons, her heart skipped beats, wounds didn't heal. She lost too much weight and had become very frail from eating "gluten-free" products instead of finding natural whole food alternatives. Worst of all, she had no problem with gluten. She just thought is would be healthy to go gluten-free.

My diet consists of meat and a great variety of vegetables. Broccoli is an almost a perfect nutritional package. Organically grown beets and carrots also top the list of nutritious vegetables. If I need more calories, I go to sweet potatoes and avocados. Some people do very well with eating fruits. I'm not one of them. Except for watermelon, plums, and grapes, I have adverse reactions to eating more than a bite or two of fruit. Apples and citrus don't like me at all.

The health fair will be fun. They will check my numbers for free. They call it a mini-physical. I may have to listen to a lecture on the value of Metformin, but I can tolerate that. On my diet, and with certain essential oils, my blood glucose has been safely under 100 every morning. Even when I 'cheated' by eating the icing off a piece of cake, it was 93 the next day. My body is better able to bounce back when it doesn’t fight its food.
