Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox-
Brer Rabbit played tricks on all the animals who always tried to catch him. But he was so clever that he escaped every time. One day, Brer Wolf said to Brer Fox, "I have an idea. Run home, go to bed, and pretend to be dead. I will tell Brer Rabbit the news. When he comes to look at you, jump up and grab him!"
When Brer Fox left, Brer Wolf went to Brer Rabbit's house and called out, "Poor Brer Fox died this mourning. I'm telling all his friends," and off he ran. When the wolf left, Brer Rabbit thought to himself, "I bet this is a trick" and he went to Brer Fox's house to see if the fox was really dead.
At Brer Fox's house, he looked through the window for any traps. There was Brer Fox, lying on the bed with his eyes shut, so Brer Rabbit went inside. "Poor Brer Fox," he said aloud. "I wonder if he's really dead. He must be for he is very still. I'd better wait here until his friends come."
Then he said, "You know a fox is dead when he keeps shaking his left leg." Brer Fox began shaking his left leg but then, of course, Brer Rabbit knew he was just pretending and ran home safely. "They can't catch me with that trick," he laughed. And he laughed all the time he was having his tea.
