What is Reiki?

Reiki (Pronounced “RAY-key”) is a Japanese word that means “spirit energy.” Reiki refers to therapeutic touch that helps the body’s natural energy flow properly. Proper energy flow through the body helps relieve stress, strengthen the immune system, and promote a general feeling of well-being.

Reiki is noninvasive and enhances your own energy fields. Your body determines how much energy you receive and where it is needed. Reiki can be used with traditional medical procedures and religious beliefs without conflict.
Benefits of Reiki

Reiki works well with regular medical treatment. It works in harmony with many forms of healing, including medications, psychological care, surgery, and any method of alternative care. Reiki works well with various healing methods in the following ways:
  • Relieves physical and emotional stress.
  • Helps eliminate the negative effeccts of energy imbalance
  • Helps minimize one’s sense of helplessness when facing disease and stress related to life changes.
  • Can help decrease the overall cost of medical care
  • Strengthens the immune system and promotes healing

  • Please note: Reiki does not replace the care provided by health care professionals. You are strongly encouraged to continue seeing your health care providers and following their recommendations in conjunction with Reiki treatments.
What to Expect at a Reiki Session

Before the Reiki session starts, you will be asked to make yourself comfortable. During the session, you will either sit in a chair or lie down. You can cover your eyes with a dark closth to help you relax and focus on your body.

I usually lay my hands in three or four positions on the head, front, and back. While I am doing the treatment, you may sense vibrations or feel my hands grow warmer or cooler.

Reiki feels different to everyone. Many people feel deeply relaxed after a session. Some clients see colors, and others experience temperature changes. During a Reiki session, the body takes in additional energy and uses the energy to help itself find balance.
    After a Reiki Session

Following Reiki, you may experience mild discomfort for a few days as the body uses and processes the Reiki energy. Typically, I recommend my clients do the following after a Reiki session:
  • Increase your liquid intake, especially water.
  • Increase the amount of raw vegetables and fruit in your diet.
  • Decrease the amount of red meat in your diet for a few days (white meat or fish is okay).
  • Eat smaller food portions for a few days after treatment.

  • Research

Research has identified the positive effect Reiki can have on one’s well-being. A few studies are discussed below.

    Pain Management
The purpose of the study was to explore the usefulness of Reiki as an adjunct to opoid therapy [drugs derived from opium] in management of pain. A pilot study was completed involving 20 volunteers who experienced pain for a variety of reasons, including cancer. All Reiki treatments were provided by a second degree Reiki therapist. Pain was measured using a visual analogue scale and Likert scale immediately before and after Reiki treatment. Both instruments showed a highly significant (p<0.0001) reduction in pain following Reiki treatment. (Using Reiki to Manage Pain: A Preliminary Report by Karin Olson, RN, PhD and John Hanson, MSc)

    Anxiety Level
[Reiki] has been validated by experiments carried out at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in New York. The experiment was carried out by Janet Quinn, assistant director of nursing at the University of South Carolina. The design of this experiment tends to rule out the placebo effect. Thirty heart patients were given a 20 question psychological test to determine their level of anxiety. Then they were treated by a group trained in laying-on hands healing. A control group of patients were also treated by sham healers who imitated the same positions as those who had training. Anxiety levels dropped 17% after only five minutes treatment by trained practitioners, but those who were only imitating a treatment created no effect.
