Background: Overview to prevent as many spoilers as possible. If you want a TL;DR with spoilers then i’ll get one typed up and posted with a link.
Amaterasu was originally one of those who resided in the Celestial plain, while there she watched over the Celestials as a Mother figure and protected the Mortal World from the evils which threatened to destroy it. Peace lasted for only so long before the evil of Orochi was unleashed upon the plain, resulting in the deaths of Celestials.
Ammy partnered up with a man from the Moon Tribe, Waka, in an attempt to destroy the evil but to no true avail. Waka revealed that Orochi could only be slain by the Chosen One, a human named Nagi. Upon hearing this news Amaterasu dragged Orochi to the Mortal World as Waka tried to flee the Celestial plain with the remaining Celestials. Amaterasu was rooted to the Mortal World to wait for Nagi’s birth and his growth while Waka was also forced to ground.
During this time of waiting Orochi took a female sacrifice each year from Kamiki village without fail. Around that time Amaterasu would also appear around the village as a white wolf, much to the villager’s horror with their belief that she was in fact a familiar of the demon that was dining on their fellow people. With this appearance she was named by the village as Shiranui. As the years passed Nagi was eventually born into the village and grew up to be a skilled fighter within his own right. At the festival night one year Nagi set off to end Orochi’s reign of terror, or rather he was forced into it, with Shiranui by his side to offer help in weakening the large demon for the final blow. Through their combined efforts the duo was able to seal Orochi away; however Shiranui was not as lucky as Nagi in her escape. Due to wounds inflicted during the confrontation Nagi carried the wolf back to the village where she died.
The villagers hailed her as a hero and built a statue in her honour.
A hundred years after Shiranui’s death, Nagi’s descendent Susano unsealed the dreaded Orochi when he removed the sacred sword from the shrine. The demon quickly spread his grasp over the land of Nippon and claimed it as his own once again, seeking sacrifices from the Kamiki village. Sensing the danger a tree spirit, Sakuya, turned to the ancient statue of Shiranui and breathed new life into the stone form in order to reincarnate the God’s spirit.
Unfortunately there was a small problem. Upon her previous death Amaterasu lost all her previous Celestial brush techniques apart from her own, the power of Sunrise. As an added difficulty, over the years people’s faith in the God’s had slowly slipped away. This lack of faith placed a severe restraint on her powers which were originally strengthened by this loyalty.
Along with a Poncle, Issun, who had been hiding in Sakuya’s robes, Amaterasu set off on her journey to restore the lands to their former glory and banish the evil from the lands. She travels to far off lands across Nippon searching for the remaining Celestial brush Gods in order to restore the paintbrush to its full power, additionally strengthening Ammy’s own strength in the process. These techniques are put to full use, both in defeating the evil that has spread to various parts of the land and formed into sectors, and to help villagers in need with various tasks in order to restore the faith in the Gods.
After fighting through the likes of Crimson Helm, Blight, Orochi, Ninetales and the like, Ammy eventually finds herself at her final destination, the Ark which had once been flown by Waka out of the Celestial plain. It is there that she must face her final, and greatest, enemy by using the faith she has gained from those she has met in order to regain her full powers for the last battle.
