I have to write a 2 page essay today, which I am going to do right now after I update my lj, because there will be no such thing as procrastination for me here at nyu. I can't. I gotta stay on top of everything, and get my money's worth out of this school; money's worth should equal me being a freakin' Uta Hagen when I leave here, but you know, I'll definately settle for a very smart and capable Maria Taylor. lol.
Last night was fun, I took my two suitemates, Alex and Emily, to meet up with my other friends at Astor Place to then go to have dinner at Yaffa Cafe, which was so neat. We met Amber, Mac, and Jeremy, and Yurell called when we were leaving Astor Place, so we all said hi, which he thought was special to have us all together.
Afterwards, Mac went home because he had to work this morning at 7am, and Alex came home, and Emily attempted to go home to get ready to go to this club she was "guest-listed" on, but her friends were too tired, so she came back out with us. We four headed to Heartland Brewery (I love that place) at Union Square, and I think we hung out there till... 1 or 1:30, it was nice and very chill.
In acting class on Friday, we discussed alot about where people hold various tensions in their bodies, and how when you are performing or even working, you must have the utmost relaxation possible in your body, so that you are capable of being a vessel for emotion to flow in and out of. I love it- I'll be walking and stop at a stop light, and realize my quads are tensed when that's unnecessary, then I relax them consciously, and it feels, well, relaxing. Also, I was washing my hands in our sink, and I noticed my left shoulder was tensing up because I had been reading on my bed propped on one elbow, and I consciously tried to lower the shoulder and relax the muscle. Larry, my teacher, said as young students of acting, we must make adjustments like these on ourselves about 500 times a day. And "that's not an exaggeration."
Also, we sat in groups of three or four, and had to tell a story about ourselves. I told a story about when I did The King and I last year, this other girl had a story about when she switched from a tiny private school to a public high school with 4000 kids, and the one guy had a story about how he got involved in theatre, which was being cast a Jesus when he was in 8th grade in Godspell. Then Larry said to take another person's story and try telling it to friends or anyone willing to listen as if you are the person it happened to. So, I took the Jesus story, even though I thought no one would believe me, because I obviously would never play Jesus in Godspell. I even added the detail, when I was telling it, that the director saw me and said under his breath: "Straight-looking boy". Needless to say, but quite to my surprise, my friend I was telling it TOTALLY BELIEVED ME! Hahahaha.... and he felt kinda dumb when I told him it wasn't actually my story. But I was excited that I was believeable enough for him to think it really happened to me. I loved it!
Alright, time to write this essay.
Oh wait! Yesterday I was walking and I stumbled upon the Joseph Papp Public Theatre, went inside and found that they have FREE stage readings, and it's also the company that recently produced Two Gentlemen of Verona at Central Park, which was apparently such a hit. Wish I had seen it! But big things like Assassins, and Caroline, or Change, and Falsettos, and Chorusline, and many many other famous works had stage reads at the Public Theatre! I'm so excited. I knew about Joseph Papp from this song in "Elegies: A Song Cycle" by my favorite William Finn, and it goes "Joe Papp never took crap, except, perhaps from writers. Joe Papp encourages writers to fight for their frightening plays." Very good stuff that William Finn.
Time to write the essay.
Have a great day everyone.
