CHARACTER NAME: Mail “Matt” Jeevas
SERIES: Death Note
CANON POINT: Post-Series
AGE: 19
APPEARANCE:
Picture. [Hair Color] Red
[Eye Color] Dark green
[Height] 5' 5”
[Weight] 115 pounds
For someone his age (he is 19 years old), Matt is pretty short… only 168 centimeters tall (5' 5") and weighs 52 kilograms (115 pounds). Shorter than Mello. He is a very skinny guy and in terms of looks, one can easily dismiss him as a computer geek.
Actually, he has three different looks. One for the fanon, one for the anime and another for the game. I will be using the fanon version of him. There are more icons of him in this color. It was never revealed what his official colors are in the manga. Red hair and dark green eyes.
In the manga, when in the privacy of the hideout he took off his thick coat. He wears a slightly loose, striped sweater, dark pants and boots. In the Death Note fandom, he is also easily identified by his dark goggles and in the manga he was never seen without them. It was never explained why. He might like them and thinks it looks cool---or has an eye condition we don’t know about.
It is strange that someone like Matt, who does espionage work--- dresses in way that makes him stand out. Usually, when you are spying on someone you should be trying to blend in, right? However, some psychologists say that wearing loud clothing is a good way to hide. It is because people would become too distracted by the clothing to play close attention to what he looks like. I am also open to the idea that there may nothing behind it except for the fact that he just has eccentric taste in clothing like all Whammy’s children.
PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY:
PERSONALITY:
Finding out anything about Matt is difficult because very little information about I’m was released officially. And, he had appeared in very few panels in the manga. 18 panels to be exact.
He, like Near and Mello, is part of the fourth generation of L successors. Quillsh Whammy founded an orphanage that took in gifted children with skills and intellect above the norms and trained them to become the #1 detective, L. Unlike Mello, who had pursued a one-sided rivalry with the orphanage’s number 1, Near, Matt was satisfied with being in third. This laid-back attitude is probably one reason why he is place at third.
Much like all the Whammy's children, he has a very low percentage when it comes to Social Skills. Matt is not a very social person and prefers to keep to himself. He would much rather be alone with his games and cigarettes than be around people . He hates the outdoors and it takes a lot to get him out of his comfort zone. He is the only Wammy's kid to ever admit that Misa Amane is "cute" Matt is both serious and teasing when he said this [ Chapter 85; Page 3 ]. He had only acted this way with Mello. Many times when he seems to be joking, he is dead serious.
But, he does have a sense of humour, at least a better one than the other Whammy’s kids. This is shown when he was complaining to Mello that he at least got to eavesdrop on a cute girl.
Mostly, he is a loner. If it is a job he can do himself, he will do it himself. It seems most Whammy’s children like to work alone.
He is addicted to gaming. When he is not working on something, his attention is on a new game. That and cigarettes are his vices.
Matt most of the time has the aura of indifference and calm. Even while facing men with guns, he had calmly attempted to negotiate his way out. Matt can be resourceful. He is not afraid to use anything to his advantage as shown in the few seconds before his death, when he reminded the guards about the information he could give them [ Chapter 99; Page 2 ]. He had probably hoped that it would buy him some time to think of an escape. Unfortunately, they did not want to give Matt any window for escape because they knew that he would get nothing from him. Keeping him alive would only make him a threat to Kira [ Chapter 99; Page 3 ].
Unlike his two fellow Wammy's companions, Matt was one among the people gathered around the television when L had spoke to them the first and only time. It was a test. Near and Mello had stood out from the rest. The two did not join the others gathered around the television. Instead, they listened cautiously from the sidelines. Matt is the more curious of the three and probably the one closest to normal. This could also show that Matt respects and is curious about L. This may be the reason that he was roped to help in bringing Kira down. Fulfilling the mission to bring the killer of someone he respects might look like a good way to die. Judging from his personality, Matt holds no hard feelings for simply being ranked third. In fact, he seemed content seeing that it hadn't affected the relationship between him and Mello.
Five years after the defeat of L Lawliet, three of his heirs, Mihael "Mello" Kheel, Nate "Near" River and Mail "Matt" Jeevas entered the story. They were determined to finish the case L had left unsolved. It was not shown in the manga how Matt reacted to L's death, since Near and Mello were the ones told. He was possibly out of Whammy’s by then. Nobody knows when he left, but he definitely left before he reappeared again in the manga. It is safe to assume that Matt had not taken the news as calmly as he might have tried to make it appear.
That is probably why he was roped in to catch Kira. Who is Kira? It is the name given to the mysterious 'god of death.' He claimed to be responsible for the deaths in the form of heart attacks of known criminals. Some people believed he is nothing but a mass murderer, while others truly think he is the coming of a god. Believing that Kira would become a threat in the future, many attempt to catch him. One of them is L, said to be the greatest in the world. However, L failed and it lost his life. L was a man that Matt respected. He may not want the besotted title of his heir, but that didn't mean he did not have any respect for him.
However, Mello hated Near. They worked separately at first to bring Kira to justice because he did not believe in Near's way in catching him. Matt chose to become Mello's accomplice, presumably because they were much closer. If he simply wanted to bring Kira down, he could have chosen to be Near's accomplice. Near is the first in line to become L's heir. But, Matt follows Mello's lead. He may seem like he just plays along but he had reasons for his actions no matter how small they are.
Matt is a spy for Mello that is for sure. It can be assumed that computers might be one of his talents. He can hack into computers and leave without traces. He appears in [ Chapter 83; Page 4 ] with Mello. He does Espionage work for Mello and kept an eye on Misa under Mello's instructions for any sign that Misa Amane could be the Second Kira. He and Mello seem to share a close friendship seeing as Matt could easily get away of teasing Mello about switching jobs because he got to listen to a cute girl [ Chapter 85; Page 3 ]. This could mean that Matt can appreciate a good-looking person better than the other two. Mello and Matt's banter seems very natural. Such show of professionalism cannot be easily ignored by a person like Mello who took the Kira case and L's passing seriously.
He assisted Mello in his plot to kidnap Kiyomi Takada, whom Mello had also suspected to have a connection to Kira. He used a smoke bomb to distract the bodyguards as Mello successfully took Takada away in his motorcycle. Matt drove away in his car, but was captured by Kiyomi Takada's bodyguards. He pretended to surrender himself. In an attempt to buy himself more time, he reminded them that he might have information. This was only a farce. Matt had a gun hidden under his jacket. The guards knew they wouldn't be able to get anything out of him and shot him. [ Chapter 98; Page 18 ] and [ Chapter 99; Page 2 ]
He was unsuccessful in predicting Kira's actions and that was what cost him his life. As brilliant as the third prodigy was, he was not brilliant enough to keep himself alive.
His death was on the news as an unidentified man. Mello apologized quietly, blaming himself for his death. Matt chose to become Mello's accomplice. He did not blame him for his death. It is also likely that he always knew that he was not getting out of the case alive or just didn't care.
Matt did not die in vain though --- because they found Kira. Light Yagami, the real identity of Kira. He is was an ordinary student in the human world, before he picked up a notebook called, Death Note, that belonged to a death god/shinigami called, Ryuk. What first felt like a harmless notebook became his weapon to become a 'god.' His goal was to cleanse the world of evil and create a pure and clean world. Killing off criminals was like taking out the trash from the world. Light is intelligent, charismatic, athletic and on the surface seemed like a nice guy. But, it is all a facade and every move he had done had been calculated to reach his desired goal.
ABILITIES:
Knowledge 6/10
Conceptualization Power 6/10
Will to act 7/10
Motivation 7/10
Social Skills 3/10
Matt is a Whammy’s house genius and the third in line for the seat of L’s heir. Not that he is interested anyway. He is content coming in third. He has no magical abilities. Just his high IQ. However, his IQ isn’t as high as Near or Mello’s. If their IQ’s are somewhere in the Ionosphere, he would be in the Stratosphere--- but that is still above normal, so it might still not be wise to go against him. Sometimes spying bores him, but it seems eavesdropping on a cute girl interests him. Not really sure if he was serious about that, though.
His special abilities lie more in computers and maybe a bit of espionage work, than combat or fighting. He likes hacking and is very good at it, which comes in handy at times--- but he also uses it to have a little fun sometimes. Like, hacking into your facebook account and changing your profile picture into a picture of you wearing a Barney suit when you were five. With some time, he can find anything about anyone. If it is in the internet somewhere, he will find it. If there is something you want to hide, it won’t be hidden for long.
His social skills are probably nonexistent. He is happy just being the guy behind the computer because he dislikes going outside. The selfish sense of humour pops out once in a while. He cares nothing about a person’s feelings as long as it reaches the goal he set. He knows the consequences, but ignores them if it means getting what he needs. This attitude is important in his line of work when you really can’t help but hurt people in the process.
Despite the computer geek image, he is a good shot. Because he was one of the people groomed to succeed L, it wasn’t likely of him to remain a defenseless individual. He always keeps a gun under his bulky coat and a pocket knife inside his boot. He’s got to be ready for anything.
He is a very laidback guy and is careless at times, but he is a quick thinker. Most of the time, he left the planning to Mello, but when opportunity strikes he can do his own planning as well. Seconds before he was shot, he was already forming a plan to escape. Unfortunately, it was a risk that didn’t work. It is enough to show that he always does mean to stay alive as long as he can. He probably knew even before he got roped into the Kira investigation that he was not going to get out of it alive. He is smart enough to figure that out.

JOURNAL ENTRY SAMPLE:
[ VOICE ]
A day.
And, so far I have been able to understand a few things.
I am alive, even though the last time I checked people don’t stay alive after having thirteen armed guards taking a few shots at you. My world is--- as the Japanese say, ‘sayonara’ and this is going to be my new home.
…
And, they just expect us not to panic? I suppose I should be grateful not to be full of holes right now. Weirdly, I can actually see the humor in this.
Excuse me if I reserve my laughter for later, for now I need to ask something---
Does anyone know where I can get a smoke?
[ ooc: This came from the game
gargleblasted but I want to start fresh with Matt. ]
THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE:
A towel.
Matt was wearing only a towel. He supposed that he should probably grateful that he was wearing a towel and not bullets. Still, clothes would still have been appreciated. Being without clothing made him feel vulnerable, and he can’t say that he enjoyed that feeling at all… especially when he had no idea where he was.
When he had first woken up, he thought he was dreaming. But, the soreness and pain felt real. He was still alive, but he could still see some of the scars from the bullets that didn’t kill him. It was difficult to judge how long he’d been out cold. Normally, the best way to estimate is to study the signs of healing on the bullet holes. If they are to be believed, he’d been out cold for at least a month. However, he also took into account that he was on a---possibly alien spacecraft. If they had the technology to build that thing, they must certainly have something to accelerate his healing.
Suddenly, someone in the room coughed to get his attention. It was a female--- alien. She presented him with a book and began to narrate the story of why he was there. From the calm way she talked, it also looked like he might not be the first man she saw clad only in a towel.
“Your home planet exploded,” she began.
He was quiet throughout the cute alien’s explanation, even though it might not look like it because Matt never took his eyes off the pages of the book, but he was listening. She continued to stare at him, probably waiting for a reaction--- or questions, but he gave neither. He just kept flipping through the pages of the book, and leaning comfortably back on his chair. He might not like being dressed in only a towel, but that didn’t mean he is shy about it.
It didn’t feel real. One moment, he was surrounded by bodyguards with their guns aimed to kill, smelled the smoke from his cigarette and feel heat from the headlights of their vehicles; the next moment he was naked in an alien spaceship.
And the book? It was an interesting book--- but not because of the words that said, ‘DON’T PANIC.’
Don’t panic? Whoever wrote this was either very serious or had one hell of a sense of humor.
Maybe he should be panicking. His planet is destroyed and everything he knew with it. Funny. He didn’t feel like panicking.
“…So, now you’re a refugee of the S.S. Thor,” the alien said, smiling uncertainly and looking a little perplexed by the lack of response from the new refugee. “Any questions?”
Oh, he had questions… but none she could probably answer.
Did they catch Kira?
Was Mello successful in taking Kiyomi Takada?
Did they get rid of those damn notebooks?
He didn’t smile back, but he did look up from the book to stare at her, as if waiting for her to say anything else. She was cute. Sure, her skin was literally blue, but so what? In all honesty, the situation was not very difficult to comprehend. Even without his high IQ, it was easy enough to understand.
There was nothing to return to.
So he did not have any other question but one:
“A smoke?”
“Excuse me?”
Matt grinned and shrugged. “A smoke. A cigarette. Do you know where I can get one?” If he can’t do anything about his current situation, might as well make the most of it.
