Darya watched as the last of the crowd gathered around the stage. She had never cooked outdoors before, but everything looked much the same as it would in a kitchen, and she couldn't quite bring herself ( Read more... )

Putting on a look of being extremely affronted at Kyouya's accusation, Tamaki grabbed the graham crackers out of his grasp. "Of course I remember how to make the cheesecake. Do you think I was born yesterday?"

The King was hoping greatly that Kyouya would decline to answer his question. He would do what he could to help them succeed with the cheesecake preparation. The blond might have been a bit on the flighty side as he shut his eyes. Taking a deep breath, something that was usually out of reach for Tamaki, he attempted to calm himself down. His eyes popped back open as he reached for the butter and a knife. While he broke the graham crackers into the crumbs needed for the crust, he needed to melt the butter at the same time.

Next, Tamaki gracefully ripped the top off the box of graham crackers and poured out a generous amount of them on a baking sheet. He stared at the crackers, lost in thought for a few moments as he tried to figure out a way to break the crackers up. A box of baking papers and a rolling pin were close at hand. He grabbed each and looked at Kyouya and Darya for approval at his plan.

Kyouya gave Darya a tight-lipped smile. "How kind." As the young woman gave out her instructions, the shadow-king rolled up his sleeves and stepped next to her. They were all silent for a time, mixing together the cream cheese (which was a lot of work. Why couldn't the chefs on hand do this?) and sugar.

Completely ignoring the blonde's question (he was sure that Host Club King didn't want it answered anyways), Kyouya spared a glance up at the sun, knocking the glasses with the back of his hand out of habit. It wasn't going to be very cold, but with all the extra work they were forced to do on top of the heat coming from the ovens, it could have dropped a few degrees.

The sound of the graham crackers at his side halted as Tamaki paused in his cracker-breaking processes. The black-haired young man paused as well, turning to look at his friend with an arched eyebrow. The eyes rolled down to the rolling pin and box of wax paper, then back at Tamaki. He was missing the implication of the unasked question--his brain more focused on beating of the cream cheese.

Darya nodded at Tamaki, giving him a non-verbal "go for it" to his non-verbal "should I do this." She smiled as it seemed that he was really concentrating on their task; perhaps this would turn out well after all. Not that she had thought it would be a total disaster, but maybe, maybe there wouldn't be any incidents this time around.

She hoped so.

Pulling out a bowl of her own, she beat the eggs and vanilla together with the whisk, seeing that Kyouya had the cream cheese covered. She decided that the shadow king had the right idea, and pushed the sleeves of her uniform up as much as she could. It struck her then how nice this was, how it was almost -- no, it was, comfortable. The practice seemed to be paying off. A happy smile curved her mouth, and had she been by herself, she probably would have been humming.

Tamaki grinned confidently as he began to roll the pin over the baking paper that had the graham crackers underneath it. He figured that one thing at a time would be best as the butter could wait while it softened up in the bowl it had been placed in. If the twins somehow managed to sneak some type of secret ingredient into the crackers he was fastidiously destroying, they would have done it long before he had arrived.

The twins had to be defeated. Time with Haruhi depended on it. "Come my faithful teammates, we shall succeed in this task and then... ah Kyouya... what was the prize again? Does it involve my beloved daughter?" the blond queried.

Kyouya could feel the buzz of energy coming from the young woman next to him. He didn't want to say that her positive energy was rubbing off on him, but he felt slightly at ease. But then Tamaki brought up the inevitable.

"Ah," the shadow king started, his hand hesitating with the mixer caught under his fingers. His brain rushed to fill in the appropriate answer. And he knew the blonde would eagerly fall for it. "Be patient, Tou-san," Kyouya consoled, resuming the last few beats of the cream cheese before passing the bowl to Darya. "The prize itself is still yet incomplete, so telling you now would spoil the surprise." He offered Tamaki a patient glance.

Darya was also curious about the prize Tamaki kept asking about. She didn't say anything, though she had gotten the feeling that there was a little more to this baking contest than just the Hosts putting on an event for their clients. What, exactly, she couldn't guess. Instead of worrying about it any further (she could figure it out later, probably), she reached out to get the mixer from Kyouya, her fingers brushing his briefly as she took it from him.

"The crust won't take much longer, and the filling is almost done; we need a pan, and someone can start cutting up the strawberries, please?" She figured she'd take charge since no one else seemed to be doing so. She also hoped Kyouya would handle the strawberries; the thought of Tamaki with a knife was almost...frightening. Turning on the mixer, she began to incorporate the eggs into the cream cheese/sugar mixture, letting her teammates get to it.

Placing the butter bowl into the microwave, Tono began to melt the butter to be added into the crust. While he waited for the butter to liquify, he reached for a bowl and guided the grounded crackers into a large bowl. It had to be of the right consistency or else the crust would be a big mass of congealing goo.

"Ah, Darya-san, do I add sugar into the crust again or not?"

It wasn’t that there wasn’t a prize, it was just that Kyouya couldn’t seem to recall whatit was. Kyouya decided that he should think a little bit more on what it was. Besides, there were more important matters to attend to--cutting strawberries.

...Which was a very tedious and meticulous job, he quickly realized, watching another red glob of fruit roll out from under his knife, across the counter top, over the edge, and to the floor. It stared up at him, sad and abandoned, no longer to partake in a relationship with the cream cheese.

With his foot, Kyouya slid it up against the counter discreetly out of sight from Tamaki--and mostly importantly, Darya.

He hoped they had bought enough strawberries.

Darya shook her head at Tamaki. "No. Jut mix the crackers with the butter and then press it into the pan." She stopped the mixer and put it down, turning to find a pan. Seeing one that would work, she gabbed it and put it down next to her blond teammate. Everything was going really well so far, surprisingly. No one had spilled things, there were no further tragic mixer accidents, and, most importantly, nothing had been set on fire so far.

Turning the oven on to start it preheating, Darya glanced at her teammates and smiled. She was having fun, even if the other two weren't, though she had the feeling that the only person not enjoying himself was Kyouya. He seemed to not be very adept with a knife, though she was hesitant to bother him. It was unlikely he would take kindly to her helping him, though she did have an idea.

"Here, I'll help." Instead of trying to take his knife away and show him, she pulled out another knife and another cutting board, and reached for a strawberry. "It'll get done faster if there are two of us."
