Ferdinand believed that it was in the early 1480's that Columbus "began to speculate that if the Portuguese could sail so far south, it should be possible to sail as far westward, and that it was logical to expect to find land in that direction." Crucial among the books that Columbus read was the Geography of Ptolemy, the Second Century Alexandrian astronomer and geographer, who had argued that the known world was part of the Eurasian land mass that stretched halfway around the Norther Hemisphere.
