I'm sure everyone has had one of these moments. Where you find out something and it takes you completely by surprise. Like a bolt from the blue. Like a shot from left field. Like getting blindsided by a bus full of hippies. Anyway, I had one of those moments today. I go to work today expecting it to be like any other day. (For those not in the know, I'm a Staff Sergeant in the USAF. I work computers and networks.) Then I get a message from our flight commander: You have orders.
Orders? Really? Sure I've been in San Antonio for four years and I know that you don't work in the same place forever. Still though, it's just an odd thing just to come in and find out: "o hay u hav orderz lol". So I talk with the commander to find out where I'm headed. So where is the next leg of my military career going to take me?
Korea. Osan AFB to be more specific. I'm to be there by March of next year.
It's a weird feeling. To know that you will be leaving the states and working on foriegn soil. It saddens, yet intrigues me. Sad because I'm going to miss working with my collegues in San Antonio. Sad for leaving Texas. (Which isn't that bad of a place, once you get past the driving. ;D) But for every sad part, intrigue comes knocking on my door. I'm intrigued of working in a completely new base. Not just a new base but a new country. Different place, different culture, different food, different everything. It's going to be an interesting experience, whether it turns out good or bad. :o
I haven't told my parents about it yet. I guess I'm still waiting for the shock to go away, until I can tell them in a calm manner. I have no idea what their reaction will be. They could be excited for me having a great opportunity to work abroad. They could be concerned about me being in a somewhat hostile environment. (Sure Korea isn't a warzone, but it's not the most friendly of nations.) There could be sadness just because I will be quite a far ways away. Who knows. All I know is that my parents have been very supportive since I started BMT back in 02, and they will always support me no matter what happens. All I hope is that while I'm in Korea, my stepmom sends some bag of her famous homemade jerky. I know I'm going to miss that. ;)
So anywho, tl;dr IT'S KOREA TIME!!!
