Spring has sprung

The flowers in front of our house are my friends.  They are the flowers that had been Marie's, the woman who built this place with her husband in 1936, raised her family here and died peacefully in her bedroom here.  These flowers welcomed us to the house when we first moved in (in April, 2001), and are the flowers that have survived drain tile reaming, drain tile replacement, house remodeling and new cement steps in front of the porch.  These flowers remind me that even during the long, hard winter, life lies waiting to appear.

This past Saturday would have been Dad's 64th birthday.  Some of these flowers made their way into a mason jar filled with some Lake Superior stones and water, and were set next to his gravestone.  Flowers were Dad's friends, too.  And he loved Lake Superior, walking and walking, looking at the rocks.  I do believe we'll walk with him again, even if the wait sometimes feels like a long, hard winter.
