This is just horrifying. I live *near* here, but my route to work is not affected. Imagine driving to work and being confronted with a reported 4' wall of water, stranding you and all traffic around you in the impromptu raging river.
Fire and Rescue is on the scene rescuing over a dozen stranded individuals with helicopters and swift water boats. I can not imagine the terror these people are going through, nor how cold that water must be. The live news reports are saying that they are investigating turning off the 8' wide burst water main, but need to concentrate on rescuing those stranded first. Hrm... seems to me those two actions might compliment one another if done simultaneously. Doesn't give them quite the same chance to use those nifty swift boats, however.
Ironically, this is on River Road and Fenway Road right by the beltway in Bethesda.
UPDATE (12:30PM): Not only has the local news been covering the situation NON-STOP for 4 hours (appropriately -- because it impacts our area's major commute routes and a county's water availability), but apparently so has national CNN and Headline News. Aren't there two wars going on, or did I miss the memo? Answering the phones has become interesting!
