A Midsummer's Wedding
All was golden that day; the grass, dried in the summer sun, the hair and the jewellery of the Rohirrim, the light shining on the roof of Meduseld. The sun made the gems on the banners sparkle, and caught the bright threads woven into the fabric of the clothes worn by those present.
The door of the hall was open. In front of the building stood four gilded chairs, two with the sable banner of the Kings of Gondor fluttering behind. Another banner bore the running horse of Rohan, and the fourth the Dol Amroth swan. Only one was occupied, the Queen of Gondor in palest blue watching proceedings with a smile upon her face.
The King was standing, waiting for the party making its way up the steps to the hall. He was in ceremonial glory, but there was a warm, joyous smile on his face and in the corners of his grey eyes.
The group came to the top of the steps, and paused. Éomer, King of Rohan, relinquished the arm of his glowing sister with a kiss and stood to one side. To their left, Imrahil of Dol Amroth gave his nephew Faramir a comforting thump on the shoulders and moved the other way.
"People of Rohan and of Gondor," said Elessar, his voice carrying so even those standing at the bottom of the steps could easily hear, "we are gathered today, on this feast day of Loëndë, to witness the union of Faramir, Prince of Ithilien and Éowyn, Lady of Rohan. They plighted their troth some time ago and now will be joined in marriage. Who here brings these two together?"
"I do," said Éomer and Imrahil.
Elessar laid Éowyn's hand in Faramir's, and in a clear voice continued the old words of the ceremony.
"And may you live in bliss and happiness until the end of your days," he ended, and nodded at Faramir. "You should embrace your lady, my lord Prince."
Faramir beamed, and bent to kiss his bride, causing an eruption of cheers from the bystanders.
"And thus were Gondor and Rohan joined forever," said Elessar to his queen.
The newly-weds spent some time greeting those who had come to watch the ceremony. The rest of the wedding party watched from their seats before the hall - this was the time for the new Prince and Princess of Ithilien.
When the couple, both glowing with happiness, came back up to the thrones, Elessar gave a quick signal to the servants standing nearby. Music began - the joyful, bright music of a Gondorian feast day - and the ale began to flow.
The wedding feast was held inside the hall, but the doors remained open to let the day in. Outside there was a feast too, with dancing and singing and mirth. The wine was rich and smooth, good Southern wine; there was Rohirric ale; and food aplenty of both realms. As host, Éomer led the laughter with tales and ribald jokes, most of them aimed at his new brother-in-law.
They ate and drank until the twilight, when the music paused and Arwen, the gems in her hair catching the last rays of the sun and her grandfather's star in the skies above, sang the traditional loëndë hymn to the Valar. The silence afterwards lasted until the sun had dipped below the mountains, and then the dancing began again.
It was still going on when Faramir and Éowyn slipped away to the rooms prepared for them. Midsummer's Day was over, but as Elessar had prophesised they would live in happiness for many years to come.
