A Voice From the Past

For five years, Harry had returned to the Shrieking Shack at Christmas. He stood in the room where Severus had died and wondered who had taken the body.

"If I could find where they buried you, I'd go there," Harry said quietly to the empty room. The room was just as dirty as it had been that day and the blood stain on the floor had dried to nearly black. He sat on the dusty floor and ran his finger over the stain.

"I watched your memories. Did you know?" Harry wiped a tear from his cheek. "It was your courage that gave me the strength to go into the forest that night. I always wanted to tell you that. To tell you that you're the bravest man I've ever known. I know I wasn't exactly nice to you, but you never let on. I never knew."

"Being in the service of a maniac made it impossible for me to tell you."

Harry jumped up, turning toward the voice. His wand was drawn, pointed toward the shadows. "Who...who are you?"

"Are you going to tell me you've forgotten my voice?" Severus stepped from the shadows and into the room.

Harry stared at him, mouth agape. "But you're...I saw you...you were bleeding..."

Severus chuckled softly. "Ah, dear boy, even after everything you've been through, you still don't know not to believe everything you see."

"But how?" Harry reached out and touched Severus' arm. "I don't understand. Why now?"

"I suspect that there are many things you don't understand. But for now suffice it to say that I anticipated Voldemort's actions and was prepared. As for why now? I grew weary of your maudlin visits to this place. And I've decided that it is time for me to enjoy my life."

Harry continued to stare at the man he'd given up for lost. There was much to discuss, but it was Christmas and right now he was convinced that miracles did happen.
