Miss, please Miss, I have a question...

Is the 2000-word limit absolute, or is it more of a, erm, guideline? ;-)

(Like, if I'm over 2000 words but under 2100?)

Well, I don't sit there and count every word, so... yeah, guideline. If you're just a few words over (5% or so), no worries.

*g* Almost every year I have someone ask this.

Mostly the 2000-word limit is to try to make sure that if someone writes a drabble - which is perfectly legit! - they don't feel badly that they didn't write a big long fic. Some fests seem to really value the long fics more than short ones, you know? And that's not the purpose here. I've never wanted to make anyone who participated feel that they had to write a novel... but OTOH I don't want to force anyone to cut when their story just needs that extra couple hundred words.
