So... Hurricane Rita, a category 5 storm with just as much intensity as Katrina if not more is barrelling down on Texas. Unfortunately heading towards the northeast part of their coast a la Houston... and not magically going inland hitting a little village that has lost its idiot at the moment. Speaking of that idiot, him and his cronies want to show that they're better prepared this time.. so they've sent truckloads of provisions to the area... which is good and all... but why do I think that we're going to see pictures of government trucks underwater when the storm is over with? Maybe I'm just a little pessimistic... or it could be that I'm just eating leftovers from a Moes burrito that tastes just a little funky.. ok going to find something else to eat. I do find it ironic though... many Katrina victims fled to Houston which I guess is the nearest big city down I-10.. [which runsthrough Tucson much later on btw:)] but I digress... and now Houston's going have a monster on their hands. These people just can't catch a break. And certainly not from the government who's priorities still seem to be elsewhere... nominating John Roberts, Iraq, North Korea.. and umm.. John Roberts. Its at times like these that one needs good music to listen too... and finally there's an album out that I can just get into: every song is unique, dynamic, emotional, powerful, guitar heavy.. and no the Smashing Pumpkins haven't gotten back together just yet, that's next February... I'm talking about the new Switchfoot cd 'Nothing is Sound'. They've backed off the Christianity heavy lyrics and just made a damn good indie-rock cd a la Third Eye Blind. But when Third Eye Blind tends to become a little on the poppy side i.e. Never Let You Go.. Switchfoot stay the rock course, and do it well:
1) Lonely Nation- great energetic opener
2) Stars- riff heavy song with a great verse-chorus dynamic
3) Happy is a Yuppie Word- first time I've ever heard a song with the word Yuppie in it... awesome song with a great 'fist pumping the air sing along' outro
4) The Shadow Proves the Sunshine- Great ballad
5) Easier than Love- great verse-chorus dynamic as in Stars
6) The Blues- another good moody ballad
...from there I'm still getting into the songs.. it's an album that takes some time to listen too as there's a lot going on in the songs musically wise.. a la U2. In the end of the day its probably my pick for album of the year.. but Death Cab for Cuties 'Plans' is close, and And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead's 'World's Apart' is up there too.
Anyway i've got a bit of homework to plow through.. but I hope you've enjoyed reading my first decent post in a long time.
