After months of obsessively reading
Electoral Vote.com, I spotted an interesting pattern in the almost-final results.
For the first time in history, Nebraska split its EV allotment: Nebraska and Maine are the only two states that allocate individual EVs per congressional district, rather than winner-take-all. Perhaps because of the similarity in naming, Omaha went for Obama, creating an island of blue in the otherwise solidly red state.
Because of this electoral anomaly, it's now possible to drive through all but one of 2008's blue and partially-blue states contiguously. Simply fly from wherever you are to Maine, reinflate the car from your checked baggage and wind your way through the tiny New England states and New York. Dip down the Mid-Atlantic zone all the way into North Carolina, and wave to poor isolated Florida from afar. Backtrack northward and take a left in Pennsylvania, heading west through the Great Lakes states. Venture inland through the cornfields of Iowa, optionally pausing to place one foot in Missouri, as they have yet to show the rest of us which way they'll go. On the way out, have a refreshing meat-based lunch in Omaha, the leading contender to become America's West Berlin, before speeding through the rest of the surrounding state with your eyes shut tight until you cross into Colorado. Cruise south to the new and improved New Mexico and catch the ferry to Hawaii. Traverse the dozen scenic inter-island bridges to get to sunny Southern California. Drop a few pfennigs into any disreputable slot machine in Nevada before heading north through California and Oregon, finally ending your afternoon's journey in Washington, where our nation's Capitol majestically overlooks the Puget Sound. Relax, sip your soothing espresso beverage, and take solace in the knowledge that this great nation now proudly stands over 40% wholly reunited.
ETA: Silly me, I hadn't even noticed that red-staters could just as easily plot a course from Alaska to Arizona, all the way to West Virginia and South Carolina, as long as they simply avoid Omaha. Truly this then is both a fair and balanced configuration!
