PART NINETY-ONE

When Richard had walked into the motel room, after knocking politely on the door, Willow did not know what to think. He was dressed like one of Anita's cop friends, wearing a trench coat and what he'd normally wear when teaching his classes, but everything looked a little wrinkled. Willow guessed they had been in a hamper somewhere, not hanging up. However, the wrinkles added a touch of something that Willow couldn't name---something that made her think of Zerbrowski. He held a small notebook in one hand and a pen in the other.

Willow felt her wolfish side awaken around Richard. It was as if a puppy was scrambling, pawing against a door behind which her beloved owner was waiting. Her wolf was excited and she could feel the delighted tension twisting her insides into knots.

"I saw you two together," Giles commented quietly after Richard gave the Watcher a fake name. He didn't flash a badge but for some reason Giles didn't ask about his identification. Willow didn't want to think that his mind had been clouded by vampiric ability, but she couldn't help herself; it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for Asher or Jean-Claude to do what was necessary.

Richard nodded. "She's a dubious ally," he told Giles. "She's been on our suspect list more times than we can count, but RPIT's been getting more magic-based cases lately, so we ask her to help from time to time."

"It is quite possible that she is casting those spells," Giles pointed out.

"Not likely," Richard said with a grim shake of his head.

"No?"

Richard shook his head again and reached into his back pocket for a set of handcuffs. They were decorated, carved with a design that Willow could not make out. She wondered if they belonged to Asher or Nathaniel, but she had to shelve the question for a later date.

"Most of the spells are robbery related," he explained. "Ms. Rosenberg's pretty set up in life. She wouldn't need to steal."

"Because of the vampire she's involved with?"

The Ulfric shrugged. "Can't comment on that," he said.

"I saw her with a vampire---"

"Well, they're legal citizens here, sir," Richard pointed out. He held the handcuffs up and before Giles could say anything else, he said, "Enchanted by a powerful shaman the department uses. Should hold her. We need to take her back to the station for questioning."

"Do you have facilities equipped to handle a witch?"

Richard nodded. "Our department deals with the supernatural," he answered, "so of course we have the right kind of cells for her type."

Willow scowled. If he wasn't rescuing her, she would have yelled at him.

"I would like to accompany you, in case something should go awry."

"She won't give us any trouble," Richard assured him.

Willow didn't think Giles was going to buy into anything that Richard was saying. He dissolved the spell and Willow dropped to her knees, whimpering and panting from the pain of the impact. She almost fell on her face because Richard grabbed her arms and held them behind her back so he could cuff her. She felt the strain in her shoulders and she silently prayed that he wouldn't break any bones or dislocate any joints.

But, then, his beast brushed against her back and she nearly wept in relief as he hauled her to her feet.

"If you want to see her, she'll be at the station," Richard said, nodding his head towards the other man.

Richard put his hand over hers and Willow's wolf begged to be free, so she could run with Richard's wolf in the air around them. Her fur brushed against Willow's insides and it made walking difficult; Willow hoped it looked like she was weakened, especially to Giles.

He turned them towards the door and opened it as a gun cocked behind them.

Willow looked over her shoulder and saw Giles holding a pistol, aiming at Richard.

"Lycanthrope, I suspect?" Giles inquired. "I felt something in the air change... is it leopard or wolf?"

Richard turned around and Willow stepped in front of him while threading her fingers together with his behind her back. He chuckled humourlessly. "What makes you say that?"

"Is she one, too?"

No one answered Giles' questions. Willow opened her shields and it was as if she opened a cage at the zoo. Her metaphysical animal fled the dark place in which she lived, and she ran for Richard's wolf. Willow didn't need her hands to act as a focus for her spells; the energy around her, behind her, was more than enough and she had a wolfish entity that would focus her magic.

"I'm sorry I don't have time to help you understand, Giles," Willow said quietly, before the magical, and nearly invisible wolves, rushed in front of them and created a sort of barrier with a few whispered words from Willow's lips.

Giles fired the gun, much to Willow's shock, but Richard pulled her out of the motel room before the barrier failed them.

Before removing the handcuffs from her wrists, Richard picked her up, gathering her against his chest. He ran and Willow closed her eyes, praying that he wouldn't drop her.

When he finally stopped, he lowered the witch to the ground. Willow felt him unlock the handcuffs and then, when she was free, she turned quickly and launched herself at the Ulfric for a hug.

He returned the embrace, wrapping his solid arms around her waist as she wrapped hers around his neck and tucked her face into his chest. His head rested on her shoulder and his warm breath tickled her neck.

"I didn't know what he was gonna do," Willow whispered into his body.

"Nothing," Richard assured her.

Their beasts brushed against each other before retreating into their respective bodies. Willow sighed and lifted her head; she didn't know what compelled her to lean upwards, towards his mouth, but the instant their lips touched it was as if something ignited between them.

Richard growled and tightened his hold on her and Willow tipped her head back as she opened her mouth. The Ulfric took the bait, chasing her with his lips and the kiss seemed to grow in intensity until neither of them could breathe.

"I... hi," Willow whispered.

"Willow, I... well..."

"Uh, I---"

Asher cleared his throat from behind them, interrupting their wordless, uncertain conversation. Willow blushed and slid down Richard's body to stand on her own two feet---something she hadn't needed to do when the kiss had been at its hottest.

She looked at her vampire lover and wanted to run to him so badly. She quickly kissed Richard's cheek before rushing Asher; the blond vampire caught her quickly, and Willow tried to bury herself in his embrace.

"How did you guys find me?" she asked after she had hugged and kissed. "How did you put together that scheme and---"

"They had help," Nathaniel said quietly from the shadows.

Willow turned and saw Jason and Nathaniel. Richard, who was standing next to Asher by the time they parted bodies and mouths, raised the handcuffs in his hand and then tossed them to Nathaniel.

"What are you guys doing here?" Willow asked.

"It took us a while to track you down," Richard explained. "Asher invited Jason and Nathaniel along, to help."

"I came up with the police scheme," Jason said with a grin.

Willow laughed shakily. "It worked to get us to the door," she told him. "Thank you, guys..." she trailed off and looked at the four males standing in front of her. "Seriously, thank you."

"We need to get moving," Richard pointed out.

The redhead nodded and she allowed Asher to put his coat over her shoulders before he wrapped an arm around her waist. He guided her out of the shadows and into a car---not Richard's, Willow noted, so she guessed it was one that belonged to JC Corporation---and the others joined them.

"Anita's in trouble," Willow said quietly as Asher drove.

"We know," Richard responded, his voice tight with emotion.

"How?"

"We are not sure yet, mon colibri," Asher replied as he drove away from the motel's neighbourhood.
