She knew someone was behind her. But, she didn't turn around; she continued to look out over the look-off point, onto the beach, as the wind whipped her hair into a frenzy.

"V, it's not safe out here."

She relaxed when she heard Eli's voice.

He put his hand on her shoulder, then slipped it away as he stepped up to be at her side. He put his hands on the railing.

"I have my taser in my bag," she said quietly. "I'd be okay."

He snorted quietly. After another minute, he said, "How're you holding up?"

"I've been better," she admitted. "My boyfriend and his daughter, and her mother are skipping town tomorrow, together. I'm sick of people treating me like I'm gonna break. And I... and I feel like... I don't know."

"So you came out here, alone, to figure it all out?"

She shrugged. "Or just to torture myself some more," she said.

"Shouldn't you be spending tonight with Duncan?"

"I was with him," she replied honestly. "Didn't go so well."

"No teary good-bye?"

"Oh... he thinks it went as well as it was supposed to," she told him. "We said good-bye... we did all of that. It just... it didn't feel right."

"Tell him to stay."

Veronica chuckled bitterly. "No... I mean, I don't want him to go... but... I don't..." she trailed off and sighed. "I can't explain it."

"Try," he insisted.

She turned and looked at him. "You always push me."

He shrugged and smiled. "Someone's got to, V."

"I'm not afraid of you, you know."

"I know."

She smiled a little. "Okay... well... it feels like a piece of me's missing," she divulged. "I can't remember a lot of the day of the crash... and I just feel like... like something's missing. I'm all mixed up. I know the doctor said that was normal, but I just want to hurry up and figure everything out!"

"Rome wasn't built in a day, V."

"Why does everyone just... just say things to soothe me?!" she demanded, feeling a little frustrated. She glared at him. "I feel like everyone's just patting me on my head. 'Poor Veronica, she's been in a coma for almost three months,' 'Poor Veronica, her boyfriend and his ex are having a baby,' 'Poor Veronica!'" She lashed out and pummeled his chest as she ranted. "I'm so sick of people treating me like I'm going to break!"

He grabbed her wrists and turned their bodies so she could lean against the railing. "Quit that," he growled. "Maybe we're careful around you because we really do think you're gonna break."

"I'm not!" she exclaimed, struggling to free her wrists. "Let go of me!"

He didn't release her wrists. He looked at her, refusing to break eye contact with her.

"Telling you that this'll take time isn't me tryin' to smooth things over, V," he said in a dangerous, quiet voice. "I'm tellin' you the truth. If you think 'bout it, you'll find I never lied to you about anything since the accident."

She knew he was right. She blushed; she was glad he couldn't see the pink colouring in her cheeks in the dark.

"And your friends and family are trying to be careful because they know you're not yourself," he continued. "We can't snap our fingers and have you back the way you were, V."

She experimentally tugged her arms. He didn't let go of her wrists. She growled wordlessly. He smirked.

"You gonna let me go anytime soon?"

"Thinkin' about it," he drawled.

"God, you're frustrating," she grumbled.

"At least I don't treat you like you're gonna break," he retorted.

She suddenly laughed, the frustration seeping out of her system as she dropped her head to his shoulder. "God... when I least expect it..."

Eli chuckled quietly. "Sorry, V."

"Don't apologise," she murmured into his chest. "That's the first laugh I've had all day." She peeked up at him. "Thank you, E."

"No problem, V," he whispered back, smiling.

Veronica laughed again and then she leaned back against the railing and shifted her weight. "So... tomorrow, I suspect I'll be with Lamb most of the evening, but how about the next day? Drive and ice cream?"

"Why don't we do it now?"

"I have things to do," she said quietly, frowning.

"Ahh... anything I can help with?"

She shook her head. "I'm not letting you get involved in this mess," she said in a very firm, no-nonsense tone of voice. "I don't want the Sheriff hauling your ass in because someone noticed my tattooed accomplice. He could threaten to put you away for life... make you cut a deal... anything to get information out of you. And I don't want you in that position."

"V, I can take care of myself---"

"Let me keep you out of trouble this time," she said quietly. "The next time I need to smuggle runaway teenagers out of Neptune, I'll come to you for help. I promise."

Eli nodded. "Fair enough," he said with a smile as he released his hold on her wrists.

She let her hands rest against his chest, where they had been held. "I just stopped here for a moment to think," she explained. "Trying to put the pieces together isn't something I can do while I'm driving... I get distracted."

"Makes sense," he said quietly.

She shrugged. "Were you just driving by?"

"Yeah."

"Seriously?" she inquired.

He smiled and shrugged. "Yeah."

"Liar."

Eli chuckled. "I guess we better get a move on, huh? Stuff to do?"

"Don't I know it," she said glumly.

A particularly strong gust of wind blew past them; she shivered. He put his arms around her and hugged her close to his body. She closed her eyes and savoured the warmth.

"It'll be okay," he promised. "And I'm not just trying to smooth things over. I know it'll be okay in the end."

She smiled and hugged him back.
