"So, don't you have somewhere else to be?" Wallace asked quietly.

Weevil shook his head. "No, man," he replied. "I told the boys I'm spending some time here today."

"I think Veronica'd appreciate it," Wallace said.

The other guy shrugged and smiled a bit, but he didn't say anything. He leaned back in the hard, plastic hospital chair and scratched under his chin, before settling in to watch Veronica.

Wallace put his elbows down on his knees, leaned forward, and rested his head in his hands as he tried to stretch his shoulders and back.

"Anymore time in this chair, and I'm going to need a new spine," Wallace muttered.

Weevil snorted in agreement.

Neither of them would be able to pinpoint exactly what made them look at the bed, at Veronica. Wallace blinked and rubbed his eyes; Weevil leaned forward and put his hand on the bed.

"Did you... see that?" Weevil asked quietly. "I thought I saw her twitch."

Wallace shrugged. "I dunno. Sometimes she blinks---"

"She does that when people talk to her," Weevil interjected. "This was... I could've sworn---"

"Wishful thinking."

Weevil frowned. "Maybe."

They lapsed into silence. They didn't really have much in common. Wallace didn't trust Weevil, and Weevil didn't exactly have a problem with Wallace, but it was hard to become friends with someone he duct-taped to the flagpole.

After twenty minutes or so, Weevil reached over and took Veronica's hand in his own. He squeezed it gently. "V, I should probably get outta---"

When he stopped talking abruptly and leaned forward even more, Wallace asked what had happened. Weevil shook his head and threaded his fingers through Veronica's, amazed at how fragile her hand appeared to be, even though he knew she was more than self-sufficient when she was at her best.

Her thumb twitched, and then she moved it against his finger.

When her eyes opened, they were duller than they usually were, but neither of her friends minded much. Wallace jumped out of his chair and put his hand on Veronica's shoulder.

"Stay calm, Veronica," Wallace advised. "It's gonna be alright. You're in the hospital. Damn... it's good to see you open your baby blues." He beamed at her, and then said, "Sit tight with Weevil for a second. I'm gonna go get your dad. He's with Mom, getting coffee downstairs. Just hang on."

Veronica blinked and swallowed hard a few times. He bolted out of the room, and she followed him with her eyes until she couldn't see him anymore.

Weevil cleared his throat and squeezed her hand. "It's good to see you awake, V," he said quietly. "Don't try to talk. The doctor said you'll be confused and tired and stuff after waking up."

She nodded and squeezed his hand. He sat up on her bed and brushed her hair off of her face.

"I'm gonna go," he told her. "Any minute your old man's gonna come up here and there'll be hugging and crying and I don't think I should be here for a picture perfect family reunion."

Veronica's grip on his hand tightened.

He smiled a bit and kissed her forehead. "You had us all worried, V," he admitted. "I didn't want our last words to be a big, bad fight."

Her lips twitched up into a half-smile.

"Okay," he whispered roughly. "I'll come by and visit later---"

"N-no," she protested, refusing to let go of his hand.

He glared down at her. "No talking," he reminded her.

She smiled. "Stay," she whispered.

He nodded. "Okay, but when your dad kicks me out..." he said, smiling as he trailed off.

Veronica squeezed her fingers against his. Weevil settled back down in his seat, as Keith, Alicia, and Wallace rushed into the room.

They fawned over her for what seemed like forever. Weevil felt a few pangs of jealousy; seeing functional families always made his heart ache a little. He tried to extricate his hand from Veronica's, so her family could work its way all around her, but she refused to let go; he'd try to pull away and she'd glare at him, so he stayed where he was.

When the doctor and nurse came into look at Veronica, she didn't want to let his hand go; however, the doctor insisted so she relented, on the promise that he could return as soon as they were finished. Alicia had to go pick up Wallace's younger brother, and Wallace had to go to work; they left with smiles on their faces, after giving Veronica promises of visiting the next day.

Keith took the chair on the other side of Veronica's bed, and Weevil returned to his seat. She sought their hands, and then she closed her eyes for a nap.

Veronica groaned when she heard the yelling. The first two days of her return to the land of the living had been peaceful.

Her father came by and talked to her about his cases, sought her one-worded insights to the roadblocks he was hitting; she liked the way listening to his conversations and trying to figure his problems out made her mind feel clearer. With every clue he gave her, she felt her mind coming together, as well.

Wallace came by after class and after practice to give him the four-one-one on school and their parents, who were still happily dating. He helped her remember the people she went to school with---even though he didn't know what he was doing---and his visits always cheered her up.

Duncan had stopped by a couple of times since she woke up, but his visits were brief and quiet; he usually hopped up onto the bed and held her while they listened to music or while he read a book to her.

Much to her surprise, Weevil---or Eli, as she had started calling him once they started spending time together---dropped by whenever he could. That meant that sometimes he showed up during the school day, when he didn't feel like going to class, and late at night, when he was on his way home from causing mayhem with his friends. Once they got past the first few minutes of verbal sparring---which really wasn't fair since Veronica wasn't up to her full strength yet---they usually had pretty decent conversations. She looked forward to his visits.

But this visit, that rudely woke her up, was anything but peaceful. She could hear three voices: Eli, her dad, and Duncan. They sounded very tense, although Eli was bordering on downright pissed off.

"Eli..." Keith said in a warning tone of voice.

"No, Sheriff, I can't just let it go," he said. "He just strolls in here after---"

"Guys," Veronica croaked, wincing. "Stop yelling."

She felt Eli's hand on hers first. "Hey, V," he said quietly. "Sorry."

"S'okay," she whispered. "Head hurts. You boys gotta place nice."

"Maybe we should get a doctor in here," he suggested.

Duncan was not happy, and he made that perfectly clear. "God! What is going on! Weevil, Veronica?! Why do you let him---"

"Why?" Eli interrupted. "How about because I was the one here everyday, any chance I could get, to sit and keep her company? What kept you from visiting, Kane?"

"Eli," Veronica whispered, squeezing his hand. "Shh. S'okay."

"V..."

She smiled. "Shut yo' mouth," she murmured.

He chuckled. "Yeah, yeah... got it. See you later, 'kay, V?"

"You bet," she whispered.

She didn't miss the dark look he shot Duncan, nor the way her boyfriend glared back, but she chose not to comment on it, because Eli leaned down and kissed her forehead.

"Bye, V," he whispered.

"Bye, E," she whispered back.

He straightened up, glared at Duncan again, and then walked to the door. In the doorway, he looked into the hall and hesitated; then he grimaced and shook his head.

"Oh, wait... I remember now," Eli grumbled, before stalking out of the room and down the hall.

Veronica frowned and looked to Duncan for some sort of explanation, but her father walked over and kissed her cheek.

"Hey, kiddo," he said gently. "I'm gonna go back to work... but I'll stop by later, okay?"

Veronica nodded and smiled at him. "Sneak Back-up in for me?"

Keith chuckled. "The last time I did that, the nurses got very angry with me," he reminded her.

She smiled more. "So what?"

He laughed quietly and then squeezed her hand. "See you later, Veronica," he said before leaving the room.

Duncan sighed when they were alone. Veronica extended a hand towards him; he walked towards her and put his hand into hers, before easing himself into a sitting position on her bed.

"Why does he visit you?" he asked.

Veronica shrugged. "We're friends," she said quietly.

"I see how he looks at you---"

"God, Duncan," Veronica interrupted. "I'm with you. He's been a good friend to me."

Duncan rolled his eyes. "Any idiot can see---" he stopped short and shook his head. "Never mind," he muttered. "You're right," he added, smiling a bit. "We're together."

"Exactly," she murmured. "Now, how about you get down on my level and hold me, while you bring me up to speed on the oh-nine-er gossip?"

Duncan smiled more and lowered himself down onto the bed, so he was reclining on his side in front of her. She turned onto her side, too; after a few kisses, he took her hand in his and told her about the last couple of days.
