She knew she shouldn't be with him. She was supposed to be acting as a chaperone for her daughter's field trip to Washington, D.C. She was supposed to be getting coffee before returning to the hotel to meet everyone for one of their scheduled excursions.
Instead, she was with him. Instead, she had called the hotel and said that she couldn't go to the National Cathedral because someone from work called and needed help with a case that has gone to trial.
Lindsey was relieved; she hated having her mother hovering nearby.
Catherine was anything but relieved.
She didn't know anything about the other man, except his last name and his piercing blue eyes. They had seen each other across the café. He had been sitting with another man, someone younger, and she had been waiting for her order. A minute later, he was walking towards her. A minute after that, they had shaken hands wordlessly while the other man---Tony DiNozzo, and very eager to make her acquaintance, as she later learned---watched them both.
Her pulse was racing and her breath kept catching in her throat and nothing the other man (who had disappeared after a sharp slap to the back of the head) said could relax her cardiovascular system.
Gibbs had a sharp mind and rough hands.
Catherine liked those qualities in a man.
