Oh God... I just cried... over a song. That doesn't happen! I'm the one that rolls my eyes and secretly laugh at the people that do that. "Oh what a sweet song, I just bawled my eyes out!" BARF! Seriously? Well, at least I didn't bawl, but I totally teared up.
So, I'm an Avenged Sevenfold fan. And late last year, Jimmy (the drummer) died while they were working on their next album. That really hit me hard, but that's totally besides the point. So the guys weren't entirely sure where that left them as a band, but they knew they had to finish the album, at least, as a tribute. They used as much material that Jimmy layed down as possible, and then they brought in Mike Portnoy, who, not only can emulate Jimmy's style of drumming, was also his favourite drummer (he actually went and got a Rev tattoo with Matt and Zack, which I think is incredibly sweet, but again, besides the point). When they released Nightmare as a single, I hated it. It just seemed like a stupid song to me, and if that's what the rest of the album was going to be like, I would pass, no matter how much I love(d) Jimmy. The album came out on the 26th, and I finally caved and got the album today. I actually quite like it. I still can't stand Nightmare, but the other songs are pretty good. Definitely along the lines of what I would expect from an A7X album, and Mike did a phenominal job. Jimmy had a pretty unique style of drumming (I think it's for Afterlife, but the guys said watching him lay down the drum tracks was like watching an octopus flail), and Mike matched it pretty well.
So anyways, why did I start crying? Because I started listening to Fiction, and his VOICE. Jimmy's voice. I can't even... Hands down, favourite song on the album. And the lyrics? I understand why Matt said that it was like Jimmy knew he wasn't going to be around for long. Excuse me while I go curl up in a corner and alternately listen to my favourite A7X songs and watch my favourite clips, all while probably crying my eyes out and missing someone that I don't really have any right to miss, since I never actually knew the dude (I met him once, and it will probably always be one of my most treasured memories).
a7x,
jimmy love
