I was saddened to hear of the passing of Jack Horkheimer today. The Charles Nelson Reilly of the cosmos. The hair, that voice. A national treasure. His nightly cosmic recaps ran on many PBS stations around the country, and orginated from the Miami Space Transit Planetarium, where he was director since the seventies. I remember "Star Hustler" was always on after Monty Pyhon back then, and when I moved to North Carolina, I felt less homesick when I would see it on my local station.
I did get the chance to meet him, once. During the seventies, and into the eighties, the planetarium was home to laser light shows set to albums. About '93, or so, Columbia Records commissioned the planetarium to produce a laser light show to launch Roger Waters' then-new album (I had to go look for the title of the release. It was Amused To Death), and I was on the guest list. I enjoyed meeting him, and Mr. H. was the perfect host at the event, even though it was apparent that he had been holding court at the open bar for a good long while..
As a friend posted earlier today, he truly is at one with the cosmos right now..
