On the Grass

We can just sit here
watching forever
as it rolls by in traincars
Making wrong guesses
as to which car will be the last

And we just sit here
A peaceful endeavor
I'm crawling inside
You can see it in my eyes

but we both look off
the cars still roll by
I don't see your hands
you don't notice my eyes

We saw it coming
The air felt dry
trash swirled around
electric light in the sky

We witnessed the first one
But we'll never see the last
We can wait for its passing
Or we can just let it pass
Stop dwelling on each car
And let the whole train be the past
Our future's on the grass

I'm waiting for dogs to cry
Secretly hoping
That new trees will die
and allow for a space just my size
So I can squeeze in just in time

And let them grow around me
Not grow with them
rather remain small
remain nothing at all
compared to their height
I'm barely in sight

And living within their memories
I will learn to remember
I will learn to be tall
And if not I'll climb
I'll climb, I'll climb
I'll scale them all

But for now I wait
watering the new tree
I'm tackle, I'm bait
I'll catch you painfully
and drag you away
from your watery grave

If you'll just enter my sights...

but we both look off
the cars still roll by
I can't see you scratching
I'm making you blind

Now I'm watching you
float on freely
no end in sight
No beginning, no light
No trash swirling
In fact, no trash at all

And you see me, too
out of the window
I'm on the platform
I'm still in the storm
But no trash swirling...
at least there's no trash at all

And the cars roll on...

It's cool, I'll wait on the platform
And the cars, they won't end
just make me a promise
just let me know when
you get to the next stop

and if it's cold there,
if you got lost,
and if you had to jump off
Because the cars here haven't stopped
