Goodbye/Improve your life. Help others.

Tomorrow, September 6th, at 9:50 AM I take a flight into Houston, TX, a city I vowed to never again approach. From there I will be transported east of Baton Rouge, LA, as one of many volunteers for the Red Cross working in their worst hardship assignment. We will have no utilities, meaning no potable water or electricity, and yes, no contact with the outside world for the duration of the assignment, amongst other things. I am not complaining, this was my choice.

I want to take this opportunity to say the following:
Not everyone has the time, ability, or desire to do what we are doing. What everyone can do, and help just as much, is do what millions around the world have done and donate to the Red Cross. I know you might be a "poor" college student or just plain "poor" (we early 20s kids use the term losely) but these people have nothing.

So please, buy a couple less drinks at the bar this weekend, wait for that movie you were going to see to come out on vhs, eat some pasta instead of going out tonight, and donate it. Every penny counts and the minimum donation is only $5. Come on, that feeds a family of 4 for 2 days. I know and you know that if you have the ability to be reading this online, you can spare yourself $5.

or if volunteering is your thing find your local chapter (those of you in Alachua County may not know it but some hurricane survivors are being put up at your local Red Cross)

And finally, take care of yourselves. I hope to find you all doing as well or better than when I left by the time I get back.

much love,
