Nothing I disagree with.I grew up a poor Russian(LEGAL)immigrant.
I put in 7 years in the USMC to pay off my patriotic debt.
I've known plenty of people to join the military and not a gang or a welfare line.

Patriotic debt? Since when does a country that was built by the hands of immigrants, who declared it the land of the free, impose "patriotic debts" on new immigrants?

There is a little thing known as self-sacrifice. Maybe he just wanted to do his part. Eh?

I know it's difficult to comprehend. Selflessness and honor, loyalty and dedication... Principles the left abandoned tens of years ago.

So let's not demean the man's respectable deeds, shall we?

I'm not criticizing his deeds in the least. But if he views his deeds as paying off his patriotic debt, then I think his reason is a bit misguided. If he joined it because he loves America and was not well off, then he surely made a very respectable choice. But no naturalized American nor new immigrant should feel they have a burden of "patriotic debt," nor should anyone who feels they have "paid theirs" cast an air of self-rightousness around those who "haven't." (Again, not saying this is him--I have no idea who he is--I'm speaking in general.)

Fair enough. But if he felt he had a debt to pay because he loves America? Then what?

I agree with you 32alpha Some people feel an obligation to a country that they feel has given them so much more than they had that they then risk life and limb for it by joining our armed forces. It's people like that who set the example and give me a reason to believe not all the immigrants in this country are bad.

I felt it was my PERSONAL duty to pay back the country that gave me and my family so much.I joined because I love America.I didn't have to.By the time I was 19 - when I went in,my family was doing just fine. It was my personal choice and I felt I was honored to serve.
If I didn't get disabled in the service I'do do it again, fuck I'd do it now if they were in such desperate need, they were taking disabled vets.9/11 is still fresh in my mind.
"Service guarantees citizenship!",although I do agree with Heinlein 100%.
