Summary: Hunk visits a candy store on Arus.
Warnings: Nothing much.
Notes: I honestly couldn’t find a reason why peppermint candies are red and white.
Now that Voltron was back to protect them, the people of Arus were beginning to rebuild in earnest. Beyond the basic homes and services, a few businesses had begun to return. One of these was a small candy shop in the town nearest the castle.
Hunk had always been a fan of food, and though he may deny it because it might be considered “unmanly,” he had a sweet tooth. He figured he would do his part to support the local economy and buy a bag of candy.
Much like candy stores back home on Earth, this one had shelves lined with display canisters of various sweets. Having eaten traditional dishes from this planet in the castle, Hunk knew they tended to favor some flavors that were a bit different than what he was used to eating. That in mind, he avoided the more exotic looking options and decided to play it safe.
He poured a small scoop of red and white swirled peppermint discs into a bag he had been provided and brought it to the counter to pay.
The woman at the till eyed the candies in the bag before giving him a skeptical look.
“Are you quite certain those are what you want? Do you want to try one first?”
Since she seemed so insistent, Hunk agreed. Hey, free samples were free samples! He absently noted the bell at the door signaling someone else entering the store as he popped one of the peppermints in his mouth. He choked and his eyes watered--it wasn’t peppermint.
“Oh my goodness!” Princess Allura’s voice exclaimed from behind him. “Are you all right, Hunk?”
He spat the candy back into his hand and coughed a bit. “I’m fine, Princess. I just didn’t expect this to taste like perfume!”
She blinked at him. “Well, of course it would. Those are spiral flower candies.”
“Huh?” Hunk had never heard of “spiral flowers.”
“They grow elsewhere on Arus,” Allura explained. “They have alternating red and white petals, just like the candy.”
“Oh! I guess that makes sense. Back on Earth, candy colored like that is peppermint.”
“Mint?” Allura asked with a frown. “Like that ‘chewing gum’ Lance had?” Hunk nodded. “What a funny coincidence! Are your peppermint plants red and white?”
“Well, no,” Hunk admitted. “To be honest, I have no idea why we color them that way.”
“Most of the sweets here are flavored with flowers, herbs, and roots,” Allura told him. “Why don’t you let me show you some of my favorites, and I’ll steer you away from the more ‘floral’ varieties?”
“Thanks.”
He left the shop with a bag with a mix of several flavors that he probably would have never expected based on appearance alone. It just went to show that it didn’t pay to assume.
