Life on the road meant certain things considered mundane by most people were novelties to the Winchester brothers, like a grocery list, for example.

Now that they had their own kitchen, they’d bought a magnetic note pad for the refrigerator to keep track of necessary supplies. They both still got a kick out of saying, “put it on the list.”

They also took turns going on runs into town, and Sam was pretty sure the next trip was his responsibility.

He looked over the list, which had the usual items like bread, eggs, and ground beef, as well as personal requests from the both of them, like the herbal tea Sam liked to drink in the evenings and Dean’s favorite breakfast cereal. Today, Sam noticed an addition in Dean’s scrawl that was a bit out of the ordinary.

He tracked Dean down to one of the storage rooms, where he was reorganizing film reels by date and subject matter. Sam might have to redo all of it later because for all that Dean complained that the Men of Letters had filing logic that made no sense, his “system” didn’t seem too much better to Sam.

“Candy, Dean?” he asked, brandishing the top page of the notepad.

“Well, yeah,” Dean replied indignantly. “It’s almost Halloween, so it’s all on sale, even the good stuff! Did you know they have Kit Kats and Reese’s in dark and white chocolate?”

“I thought you didn’t like white chocolate because it’s not even-”

“Really chocolate,” Dean finished for him. “Yeah, yeah. Not the point. We won’t see deals like this again until after Valentine’s.”

“What do we need candy for?” Sam wondered aloud. “We’re in a secret bunker on the outskirts of town. I seriously doubt we’re going to get any trick-or-treaters.”

“We wouldn’t be getting it for some snot-nosed kids in costumes!” Dean actually sounded offended at the idea. “The candy is for us. To eat. ‘What do we need candy for?’ ” he scoffed in a mocking tone.

“Well, it’s my turn to do the shopping, so what if I just don’t get any?” Sam countered.

“But it’s on the list,” Dean argued. “We have an agreement. If we need something, we put it on the list and get it the next time we’re at the store.”

“You don’t need candy, Dean.”

“Oh, please.” Dean rolled his eyes. “Like you need everything you write on there. I still get the stuff, though, don’t I?”

“Fine,” Sam capitulated. “You can have one bag, and if you want something specific, you’d better say so, or I’ll pick for you.”

Sam may have come back with more than one bag of candy. What could he say? There were some really good deals!
