Dean hadn't spent Halloween as a civilian since he was a kid. He'd never really had a permanent home to decorate or handed out candy to the neighborhood kids. He was kind of looking forward to it.

He was in the middle of deciding which kind of candy bag to open first--for handing out, of course--when Lisa walked up with a frown on her face and an equally glum Ben trailing behind her.

"Is something wrong?" he asked, his mind flashing through the multitude of nightmarish supernatural possibilities.

Ben grumbled "Yes!" at the same time as his mother insisted "Not exactly."

Lisa rolled her eyes and warned her son to keep quiet with a stern look.

"Ben was hoping to go trick-or-treating unsupervised this year, but I'm not sure I think he's ready for that level of responsibility. Would you mind tagging along? You might be a little less embarrassing than his mommy."

Ben managed to keep from whining until they left the house.

"I'm twelve," he vented and kicked a rock violently. "I'm not a baby!"

"You're acting a little bit like one, though," Dean remarked, earning himself what he could only assume was a glare from behind Ben's mask.

"It's just our neighborhood. What's the worst that could happen?"

Dean laughed. "You really want me to answer that? I've seen some gnarly things on Halloween."

Ben huffed and stomped down the driveway.

A few houses down, a girl dressed as some bow-wielding woman or other (Katniss? Artemis? It's not like there was a shortage of options.) came running up to them.

"Hi, Ben!"

"Oh, uh, hi, Julia," Ben greeted her more shyly than Dean usually saw him behave. Dean was pretty sure this was the real reason behind not wanting an escort. "Are you out here by yourself?"

Julia shook her head. "I'm with my mom and my baby sister." She jabbed a thumb behind her at a frazzled woman trying to corral a toddler dressed like a pumpkin. "That's a cool mask! Did you make it?"

Dean saw Ben's chest puff up slightly. "Yeah! Well, Dean helped," he admitted, pointing to his own guardian for the evening.

Dean waved. "Hey, Ben, c'mere a sec."

Ben obligingly came over, but he gave Dean a suspicious look. "What?"

"If you promise to stay where I can see you, you and Julia can walk ahead, and I'll hang back with her mom and the sister."

"Why can't you just let us go off on our own?"

"Fine. I was trying to be nice. I'll just walk with you and tell lame jokes." Dean cocked a challenging brow.

"Okay, okay!" Ben started to head back to the girl but paused and turned back. "Thanks."

It wasn't exactly the evening he'd been expecting, but all in all, it wasn't too bad.
