Saito watches.
Kamiya and Okita, their understandings and their tired bodies, their give-take eyes, it's been quite a day, hasn't it. They smile. Kamiya passes a bowl of rice. Songbird voice.
Okita-sensei!
He nods.
Doomo.
Saito sees.
He has a hunch: unfamiliar sensations have crept into Okita's heart like garden snails, incomprehensibly. He watches Kamiya, he feels, and he does not understand.
Of course, Saito tells him later admist his crinkled eyebrows and bright round eyes, there is no proof.
Okita frowns. But you always have such good hunches, Saito-san.
His illusions elude him. Okita is still too young to realize, and will be for some time. Saito shuts his eyes to the world.
You talk about Kamiya, he says plaintively. But sometimes, you are still a child.
