Andy sighed as he shuffled into his office. Everything was as he had left it, at least. He had wondered if he would return and find it in a complete uproar.

But no one had replaced him during his unscheduled absence. His office had been vacant and locked. When he had asked Sergeant Brice about it, Brice had not known why. Apparently it was just another element of the spell that they had followed without question.

Andy crossed to his desk and sat down behind it. The files he had been working on right before the spell’s execution were spread out in front of him-the thief’s, his lover’s, and their murder victim’s. He remembered reading them, sickened by the evil present in each, and then the flash of light had come. Suddenly he had been sitting behind a much different desk, going over the financial reports at the elementary school.

And he had never once found it strange. Not until Paul Drake had appeared looking for Della. Then the seemingly unassuming world had crumbled to pieces.

He recalled everything now; two complete sets of memories, in fact. It was bizarre and uncanny and altogether uncomfortable. But it was better to remember. After having forgotten all of his true life, he didn’t want to forget anything ever again. Besides, maybe his memories of that mixed-up world would help in the prosecution of those responsible.

He had to wonder what Vann or Vivalene or whoever had been thinking, to place him at the head of the school where Della had been appointed a teacher. He would have thought that with their sick senses of humor he would have been made an astronaut. Especially after he had told Vann about his and Jimmy’s backyard games as children.

He was just as glad they hadn’t gone that route. He seriously doubted he would make a decent astronaut, spending so much time off the ground. He enjoyed watching the stars and constellations, as he had as a child; astronomy was a hobby of his. But that was as far as he wanted it to go.

Maybe they had done something different because no one was supposed to leave the county. If Andy had been an astronaut, he would have most likely been outside the limits. Unless he had been home between assignments.

He sighed. It was over and done with. It didn’t really matter now. He was just relieved to be back, as surreal as it was to realize he had been gone.

He pulled one of the files towards him again. It was way past time to get back to work.
