The town was spreading. Spreading like the curse on the human boy’s arm. Where there had been green, growing forest was now blackened earth. Every day the taint went a little farther. It had crossed the river and started up the mountainside.
The woman won’t stop until she has eaten up the whole world, Moro thought, her lips pulling back to show the ends of her teeth. Just as the curse wouldn’t stop until it had devoured the boy. She didn’t waste any sympathy on him. It was only fair that humans should suffer as well as the world for the selfishness of their kind. She could admit that it was perhaps unfair that the boy had to pay for what the woman had done, but no more unfair than what had happened to Nago, or the kodamas as their trees were cut down, or any of the forest people who had died in the path of progress.
And that progress would stop. Moro was not the Wolf God of the Mountain for nothing. The farther Eboshi ventured from her own walls the deeper she was in Moro’s territory. All the iron the woman had stolen from the hills wouldn’t save her once she was between Moro’s teeth.
From down in the valley there was the creak of murdered trees as the huge gate swung open. Moro squinted through the haze of smoke over Irontown and saw a line of carts heading for the road that would take them over her mountain. She growled low in her throat and got to her feet. Her three children waiting silently below her vantage point fell into step behind her as she went to wait for the trespassers to come into striking range.
