God wants no excuses.
I have only one:
You had your daddy's hands.
Forgive me.
You were your daddy's son.

She stroked his hair with her smile never wavering, “Still not tired?”

“Mmmm…” he muttered leaning against her still not moving.

“It’s late… you really should go to sleep you know…” Her hand continued to stroke his hair, the dark unruly mess only emphasizing the tiredness on his face.

“Don’t wanna…”

“You had a long day silly. You could at least try laying down again…” She gave him a gentle kiss on his forehead and he didn’t meet her eyes. Her lips pursed and finally she tried again. “To-kun…”

“Mommy is… is Daddy a bad man?”

Her hand froze mid-stroke and for a second her breath caught. Her eyes looked ahead and she forced herself not blink, and dared her self not to look at the child. Her hand almost shook as she resumed her stroking, and her other arm tightened her hold on the boy.

“Where did you hear that?”

“…Some teachers at school… I over heard…” he muttered and when he saw her face he sighed, “… and earlier I heard Uncle Hakuba talking about it to Grandpa. They were arguing about him and said he should at least show his face… Mommy why did he leave us?” The little boy turned to cuddle closer to her, and she wrapped both her arms around him trying to keep her face calm.

“That’s silly… of course he’s not bad. And he had to leave because, well, they don’t understand that’s all. Sometimes just because what your doing is right doesn’t mean everyone thinks it is… don’t you ever believe your father left because he wanted to. He loves you To-kun… he loves us both very much and he’s a good man.” She pushed his chin up to have him look up at her face as she beamed down at him.

The boy’s bright blue eyes sparkled up at her, and she noticed for all his fears and worries not a single tear was held in them. She patted his cheek and laughed, “And what would he say if he saw that frown… Perhaps… perhaps he’ll be able to visit soon ne? Just imagine what he’d do if he saw such a serious expression on his son-” it was all she could do to keep her voice steady as the boy hesitantly broke into a smile.

Just like his father. The same eyes, hair, look…There was no doubt who his father was… He was a miniature version to a tee, and perhaps that was what almost undid her. Except she’d learned quite a long time ago that she had to be far stronger for him than for herself. She hadn’t believed that she could love someone more than she had Kaito, but when Toichi had been born…

And those first years had been the happiest of her life until-

“I think I can go to sleep now…” said the boy with another smile. “You think Daddy will see us soon?”

“I’m sure of it…”

He gave a nod and then grinned, “Alright than! Don’t be sad either ‘kay Mommy?” There was a poof and a rose appeared in the little boy’s hand- one of the last tricks Kaito had taught him before he’d had to run.

Aoko laughed to hide the sob that swelled up in her throat. She kept herself from blinking and leaned over to kiss the boy’s forehead, “Go to bed you little rogue.”

“Yessum!” He crawled out of her lap and headed out of the room towards his bedroom down the hall. She waited until he was out of hearing to give into her own silent sobs.

“Kaito…” she said softly to herself making sure her son couldn’t hear her own tears, but than she had never been able to keep her poker face. Not until all hell had broken loose the night they’d caught him.

It had seem so naïve of them… so ridiculous to think they could go on like that and someone not finding out; after all look at what had happened to his father? At least they hadn’t killed him, but than they might as well have.

He hadn’t wanted to leave but-

But better this than the other option…

Except sometimes it was so hard, so very hard as she watched her son grow older everyday and more and more like him. The visits were so scattered, and why the news just couldn’t leave Kaito alone?

She had never doubted him, and while he may have never been the most virtuous of people, well their son had more than enough for them both…

And he had proven just how honorable her thief truly was.

But it still hurt… and while she knew it hurt him far worse sometimes she wondered… sometimes…

But looking out of her window into the evening moonlight- She couldn’t help but think how much she loved him, and pray that her son would someday be able to know just how good of a man his father truly was.

Even if he didn’t understand yet just what it had cost his father to save them both…
