“You know too much for a girl your age. It’s going to get you in trouble.” Butterworm sighed. He was watching her from the top of the rock. She didn’t like him having the high ground, but gave him a sharp look and went back to collecting the wild barberry.
“And how fast would you have eaten me if I didn’t know this stuff?” she asked.
“…Well…You got away the first time. You run like a deer when you’re scared.” Butterworm chuckled. Her glare went icy and he was quick to add. “Not that THAT happens often, mind you… But I did find out where you lived. We could‘ve rematched later, if you hadn‘t-”
“Hadn’t know what to do.” she finished for him. “I know what I’m doing here, too.”
“I hope so, little missy,” Butterworm chewed on one of the drawstrings of his stolen hoody. “Because without vetivert, that stuff can get out of hand.”
She was silent for a heartbeat too long, and the Night Thing cackled.
“Didn’t know that, didja? Didn’t think so. Now, if I could just figure out why a sweet little girl would be out in the barberry patch at this hour of the night, maybe I could tell her where to find vetivert this time of year.”
She was quiet again and Butterworm’s teeth gleamed in his grin.
“What do you say, kiddo? I’ll trade something you don’t know for something I don’t know. Or will you admit to not knowing at the risk of not finding out until it’s too late?”
“The new janitor at the school can‘t keep his hands to himself,” she said finally. “So, let’s see how he does with pig trotters.”
“Fair enough.” The Night Thing said. “Vetivert is the tall, tufty grass on the hill over the gravel pit. You’ll want the roots.”
“Fine. Whatever.”
“Yeah, you’re welcome.”
