Chapter One
Not for the first time Kagome stared at the ceiling as the sounds of the television filtered in from the living room. As she rolled over on her side a sigh of frustration escaped her lips. Had this been only the first or second time this had happened perhaps it wouldn't have been so bad but it had gotten to be a habit she'd come to detest. Why did she bother coming over to his place anymore? Yusuke's voice could be heard shouting at the television and a familiar anger welled up inside her before she quickly shoved it down. It had to be something wrong with her, there was no other explanation for it. Yusuke certainly seemed to enjoy himself enough whenever they were intimate, though the way he either fell asleep immediately afterwards or found something else to do had her questioning even that at times like this.
More to the point, what was wrong with her? Everything she'd ever been told or read had indicated that it was supposed to be a mind blowing experience but so far she'd had yet to experience it and she was far too shy to experiment on her own. The problem was only compounded by the one time she'd spoken to Keiko, knowing that for a while they'd been together as well. The woman's words did nothing to quell the feelings that she was the problem, after quite a bit of prodding Keiko had finally admitted to what their sex life had been like and how good of a lover she found Yusuke to be. Of course the woman had quite happily shared what she knew Yusuke liked the best, it still didn't solve her problem. Instead it only hastened the man leaving her alone and unfulfilled in the bed.
"Dammit you idiot run faster, you're gonna lose him!"
Apparently Yusuke was engrossed in whatever movie was on and there was little to no hope that the man would come back in anytime soon. Maybe she should have just went out there when he asked her if she wanted to join him. "The hell with this." If nothing else was being held afterwards too much to ask? Apparently it was by the looks of it, Kagome was more than fed up. With him, with herself, with the whole situation. A muffled knock at the front door and then muffled footsteps told her that someone was stopping by. As she heard Kurama's soft voice in the air she knew that any hope whatsoever of Yusuke coming back in with her were gone now. Throwing the sheet off of her nude body she sat up and began looking for her discarded clothing. They weren't that difficult to find, it wasn't as if they'd started disrobing at the front door flinging the garments around.
Laughter floated through the air making Kagome sigh as she fixed her skirt in place before working on the buttons to her blouse. What the hell was going on out there, a party? That would just be the icing on the cake to a wonderful evening she thought as a brush was fished out of her purse. As Kagome looked in the mirror the corners of her lips turned down. And here she'd been worried about going out there looking like she'd just been done. There wasn't even a tousled look to those thick locks of hair, she could have gone out there and they'd have been none the wiser. Putting the brush back in her purse, Kagome opened the door and walked down the hall. As she entered the living room all conversation stopped, their eyes going to her. Somehow she should have been surprised to see Hiei there as well but she wasn't. "Don't everyone talk at once now."
Yusuke took in the girl's appearance and noticed she had her purse in hand. "You leaving already?" Her behavior the past couple of weeks had started to bother him but the man had never claimed to understand what went through a woman's mind. Even Kuwabara had mentioned how she seemed to be distancing herself from them though even the self proclaimed 'soldier of love' seemed baffled by it. If Kuwabara, who seemed to be more attuned to women's feelings, couldn't understand what was bothering the girl then Yusuke knew he damned sure wouldn't be able to either. At her nod he frowned slightly, "I thought you were gonna stay the night."
The bitter retort was lingering on her tongue just waiting to be turned loose but by an unimaginable force of will she refrained from saying it. There was no missing the anger in her eyes though, each one of the men in the room seemed to be gazing at her curiously with the exception of Yusuke who just stared at her. Kagome snorted, he probably couldn't understand what he'd just done and figured that she was just being 'moody' as he liked to put it. "Well I was but then it occurred to me that if I'm going to be sleeping alone, again, I might add then I may as well do it in my own bed. I have work tomorrow anyway so I'll see you later." Briefly she turned to Kurama and Hiei, ignoring the stunned look on Yusuke's face before nodding a greeting to them. "Sorry to be running out like this but I have to go. It was nice seeing you both."
"Fine whatever." The comment she'd given him was harsh and it had Yusuke snapping back in kind when the two demons turned incredulous looks on him. First she complains that he always falls asleep on her after sex. In an effort to make her happy he tried to find ways to stay awake but none of them could be accomplished laying in bed. Just what the hell did she want from him anyway? The sound of the door closing softly had him shaking his head and turning back towards the two demons who had fallen silent. "So... now that my evening is totally fucked is there anything you guys would like to do?"
Hiei snorted at the incompetence the man was showing and moved a few steps over towards the window to watch the woman walk off. Once Kagome had gotten outside her entire posture had changed to one of pure dejection which was something he was unaccustomed to seeing in her. Unless his sense of smell was broken there seemed to be a far greater problem going on than what little insight they'd been given by her comment. Was Yusuke truly so blind as to how badly the situation could deteriorate? "Are you sure you'd rather be sitting here speaking with us Detective? I'd say we came at a bad time, you might want to go fix this problem before it gets any worse."
"You must think I have a death wish. I don't know just what pissed her off this time but if I follow her now she might decide to use my ass for target practice. I'll give her a few days to cool down. She'll come back." There was no reason for him to believe otherwise, it wasn't like this was the first time she'd stormed off pissed off about something. Of course the last time was over when he'd rolled over and started snoring. Waking up to the feeling of being beaten with a pillow while your girl was screaming how much of an inconsiderate jerk you were wasn't one of Yusuke's fondest memories.
The mental image of Kagome taking an arrow to the Detective's ass was indeed an amusing one but it wouldn't necessarily solve the problem. Human's were always so strange to him. It had been Hiei's misfortune to see a television program dealing with men unable to please their woman and he'd laughed at the time thinking the human race had to truly be pathetic if they were having such issues. Never in his wildest dreams did the apparition believe that Yusuke would be one of those fools that couldn't seem to accomplish that much. "Keep telling yourself that Yusuke, just don't be surprised when she leaves to find someone who can manage to get the job done."
It took a moment for Yusuke to realize just what it was that Hiei was insinuating before his face turned red. "I'm not the one with the damned problem. It's not my fault she just lays there!" Sure things seemed to move a little fast but how the hell was he supposed to hold out with some of the things she did to him? He damned sure wasn't going to tell Kagome to stop when it felt that damned good. The lack of responsiveness he got from her was of a concern but after a while he'd come to accept it as just the way she was. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that she was a priestess. It was always possible that she wouldn't allow herself to enjoy it, if that was indeed the case then he couldn't change her mind.
Kurama was beginning to get the sinking suspicion that Yusuke was more of a problem than he realized. More than once the man had brought Keiko over to his place when they were dating because his mother was using the apartment for a party. It'd been difficult to miss just what they were doing once the bedroom door shut but most of the time they were in there for ten minutes at best before the sounds died down. It had crossed his mind on more than one occasion that either Keiko was incredibly responsive or that neither one of them believed in much foreplay. Sighing heavily, Kurama leaned forward wondering how in the hell he'd gotten involved in this to begin with. "Yusuke, have you ever taken into account how fragile her self confidence is?"
"Yeah but what the hell does that have to do with anything? And why are we talking about this anyway?" When Yusuke had opened that front door, this topic of discussion had been the farthest thing from his mind. Now the two demons were looking at him like they were just waiting for a bit of juicy gossip. It was a very strange situation to find himself in that was for sure. Now he shifted uncomfortably in his seat, the movie long forgotten as his friends continued to scrutinize his behavior.
"Everything you idiot, do you honestly think you're helping the situation when you stare at another woman with her present?" Personally Hiei thought that Kurama was on the right track with the girl's mental state. She'd never been particularly stable to begin with, not that any of them really were in the first place but the way Yusuke acted sometimes couldn't help matters. How hard of a shove would they have to give to get Yusuke going in the right direction? On more than one occasion he'd thought the girl would be better off with someone who didn't have such a tendency towards blindness but for some reason she cared about the Toushin despite the fact that he unintentionally tore away at the security she had in their relationship.
It wasn't as if Yusuke could deny the fact that he looked at other women's bodies, he was a male and that's something they were expected to do. Of course the women didn't see things that way but he couldn't help that. Keiko had gone a long way towards breaking him of the habit, while doing it she'd been around and for the most part it had stuck even after they'd split up. But still, some habits were hard to break. "Kagome knows its not serious, besides you still haven't told me what this has to do with anything. If you're gonna help me dammit then do so. Don't just sit there and act superior because you think you know what's going on."
"Okay, let me see if i can explain this to you somewhat. Remember when you first met Kagome, how she acted?" Kurama watched as the man thought back to that particular period in time and nodded. It had taken her forever to warm up to the group when Koenma had alerted them to her presence in the city and had told them just what she was. Eventually she came around though when certain team mates had been displaying an interest in her she'd remained blissfully unaware. Yusuke had always been the more outgoing of the two however though and had made a move on her first. The look of shock on the girl's face when he asked her out had been priceless. "If she thinks she's not good enough to keep your interest and you reaffirm that belief in her mind by looking at other women what is that going to do to her?"
As Kurama's words sank in Yusuke remained silent before shaking his head. Kagome knew that he wasn't really interested in any of the other woman. "She knows better than that. Sorry Kurama but I think you're wrong this time. We talked once and she said it was something guys did and that at least I didn't go around groping their asses like some sort of pervert." As much as he valued the kitsunes opinion, Kurama wasn't always right about everything. Said kitsune was now looking at him with a bland expression, clearly not pleased with being told he was wrong.
"And I thought Kuwabara was dense. Here, let me spell it out for the slow person in the room." Hiei narrowed his eyes at the man, fed up with his foolishness. If being blunt was what it took to get through to the man then so be it. If this didn't work then he just might have to reconsider his decision in not to interfere in their relationship. "You say she just lays there, it's either because you are in serious need of lessons on how to please your lover or because she's worried about being a disappointment. I'd be willing to wager it's a combination of the two."
"What the hell do you know Hiei? I haven't gotten any complaints before this!" This was twice now that Hiei had insulted his prowess in the bedroom and Yusuke's patience was rapidly reaching its end. "If you don't believe me go see if Keiko will talk to you, it isn't like I have any reason to be ashamed." Yusuke crossed his arms as if daring the apparition to do just that. Of course, it was likely that Keiko would try to knock the man into next week for asking such a question but that wasn't his problem if the demon was actually stupid enough to ask.
"Don't be foolish, I don't have to ask her to confirm what's plain to see in front of me. Mark my words Detective, if you don't fix this problem be assured that someone else will do it for you." Without waiting to hear a response Hiei walked out the front door, tired of the argument which was going absolutely nowhere. He'd only followed the kitsune because he was bored and had nothing else to do that evening. As it turned out, he was glad he came. The entire trip had been rather.... enlightening.
XxXxXxXxXxXxXxXx
"So then he says, 'I'm going to watch a movie. If you come out I'll save you some popcorn.' And then he just gets up and walks out of the room!" Kagome stirred her milkshake angrily as she sat at the table under a large tree with Shizuru. The incident had happened over a week ago and she had yet to see Yusuke. Hell, the man hadn't even bothered to call her until yesterday and Kagome knew it was because he was horny. Hearing his voice had brightened her day considerably until he asked her to wear the lingerie he'd bought her for her last birthday and nothing else. What topped it off was suggesting that it would make a nice apology for the way she'd stormed off leaving him to face Hiei and Kurama's questioning.
"Well at least he offered to share the popcorn, my lousy ex wouldn't have even done that. He'd have asked me to go make it for him and be sure to put on extra butter." The stupidity of some men continued to amaze Shizuru on a daily basis and Yusuke it seemed was no exception when it came into the 'I have to be an idiot' category. Unfortunately since she was friends with Yusuke as well it wasn't as if she could knock some sense into his head. The man probably wouldn't even listen to her. "So you left after that I take it."
"Yeah, after waiting to see if maybe he'd come back. He didn't of course, then company came over and that was it. I don't know what to do about him Shizuru, it's like the only reason he keeps me around is because I'm a warm body and not even a good one at that. He can't wait to get it over with so he can rush off to do whatever. Either that or he's snoring in my ear." The ice cream had long since turned to mush as she continued to stir, not looking up at her friend. Maybe she should say the hell with it and break it off. She cared for Yusuke but Kagome wasn't sure just how much more she could take. It wouldn't be so bad if every once in a while he'd stick around afterwards. Just being held for a few minutes would go a long way to making her feel better but obviously that was too much to expect.
"Kagome.. you may not want to think about this but I have to ask. Have you two thought about taking a break for a while. I mean, if the only time you are seeing each other is when he wants some then maybe you need to. It's obvious you aren't happy with how things are turning out and he needs to pull his head out of his ass so he can breathe." Despite what feelings Kagome had for the man the relationship was obviously taking its toll on her. Most likely the only thing that would make Yusuke stop and think about what was happening is if the girl called it quits for a while though that could make things even more interesting. Shizuru hadn't said anything to the girl because she definitely needed to get it all out but they had a listener and she could easily guess just why Hiei was there. Perhaps a bit of competition would do the dimwit some good.
"I... " Kagome sighed heavily, knowing that the older woman was probably right. "I've thought about it but what then? Yusuke could have any girl he wants, I'm not sure why he even picked me. Why does it have to be so hard?" There was no denying that she cared for the man. Somewhere in the back of her mind the fear also loomed that she would always be alone. Even if he only saw her as a piece of ass they still had something together. She could pretend that she was loved and wanted, couldn't she?
For the past half hour Hiei had been sitting up in the tree listening to the priestess speak and though he'd known some of what had been going on the apparition hadn't been aware of the large extent it had been happening. No wonder the girl had been frustrated by the situation, it seemed as if speaking to Shizuru over the problem had been a last ditch effort to come up with a solution. Fortunately for her, Hiei had one in mind though he still wasn't sure how Yusuke would take it. One way or another Hiei would get his way, it was up to the Detective to choose which road he would take. Obviously the man wasn't completely suited to the girl's needs, just as his own personality had some distinct failings that could cause problems. However the two of them together could very well put an end to what was plaguing the girl. and himself for that matter.
Kagome's insecurities would be difficult to overcome and it would take a while but there was no doubt in the apparition's mind that he could succeed. The damage that Yusuke had helped to inflict with how he treated her in the bedroom was likely to be the easiest of things to overcome. In this instance the Detective could watch and learn, only once he'd proven his point that the priestess could be responsive to a male's touch would the man be allowed to participate. With that thought in mind Hiei left the ice cream shop that the girls had chosen and made his way towards Yusuke's house. His own ki flared, allowing the Detective to know that he was coming. What he had to say would come as enough of a surprise to the man without adding anything more to it.
Yusuke looked up seeing the front door open though he was expecting it. Hiei rarely stopped by unless it was for something important and he wasn't big on pleasantries in the first place. "So why are you here Hiei?" The serious look on the apparition's face had him curious, it obviously wasn't an emergency or he wouldn't have gotten two words out before Hiei interrupted him. Instead to his surprise the hybrid took a seat opposite of him in one of the recliners and was now giving him a measuring look.
"I'll get right to the point then, Kagome is the reason I am here." Being blunt was the only tactic to use in this sort of situation, not that Hiei had necessarily found himself in something like this before. At the girl's name being spoken Yusuke's expression became wary which had Hiei smirking. So the Detective had noticed his attraction, good it would make this so much easier in convincing him that he was serious. "I learned some very interesting things today and I've come to a decision, the ultimate outcome depends entirely upon your choices."
"I don't think I like the tone this conversation is taking," Yusuke scowled at the apparition, unsure of what this decision was that the man was talking about. What interesting things had he learned exactly? The last time Yusuke had spoken to his girlfriend she'd called him an inconsiderate jerk and screamed that he was the one that needed to apologize to her. Of course then she'd slammed the phone down on him and he hadn't heard from her since.
Hiei shrugged his shoulders, unconcerned with Yusuke's answer. Once he came to a decision on something there was little that could be done to change his mind, this instance would be no different. "Whether you like it is of little concern to me. I stepped away from the girl once because I respect you Yusuke and frankly it made more sense for you to be with the girl given what I am. However after hearing her speak to Shizuru today and listening to what has been going on I've come to regret my decision." Hiei held up a hand when Yusuke looked about ready to hit the roof, he wasn't finished yet. "Whether you realize it or not Kagome thinks she's nothing more than a piece of ass to you and you've done nothing to dissuade her from such thoughts. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. I told you once that if you didn't do something you were going to lose her, that time has come to pass. Even now she's considering breaking off the relationship and letting you go to someone who can make you happier."
"Bullshit, Kagome knows she means more to me than that." Yusuke wasn't sure what game the apparition was playing but he wasn't amused by it in the least. Not once had he made Kagome feel that way to his knowledge. Sure he wasn't the best boyfriend in the world but he wasn't a complete jackass either. Leaning forward he fixed the apparition with a hard stare. "I don't know what you're trying to pull here but I suggest you back off of whatever it is."
"And I suggest you shut up and allow me to finish speaking before you make a decision you'll come to regret. As I said, I've made a choice, what you decide your part in this is will be up to you. Obviously you lack what it takes to keep her happy yet she still cares for you. I am willing to accept this because of our history together. Considering the fact that she won't even speak to you at the moment it would be child's play to move into the picture. I believe we could balance each other out, eliminating the problems that have been created due to certain circumstances. If this is acceptable to you we will begin to work out the details of this arrangement, each seeing to Kagome's needs. If it is not something you can live with then make no mistake I will proceed without you in the picture and you will give up any and all claim to the girl." Judging by the look on Yusuke's face the apparition had managed to stun him yet again. Hiei was tense, waiting for the Toushin's answer whether it be a verbal or a physical one. While Yusuke might be more powerful, Hiei knew that he had far more experience. He'd been cocky when they fought the first time but having known Yusuke for years, he wouldn't be taken by surprise again.
Yusuke's first thoughts were ones of anger that Hiei would dare to lay down an ultimatum like that. Of course that was just the way the apparition was, he took what he wanted which brought Yusuke around to the question of was the hybrid serious? If he was, would Hiei even give him a choice in the matter? The man had to be bluffing, that was the only conclusion Yusuke could come to. Leaning back in his chair the Toushin forced back his anger and actually started laughing which startled his friend. "You really think Kagome would leave me for you? Face it Hiei, you had your chance and blew it, Kagome's mine now. But tell you what, you think you could actually convince her to even consider the possibility of belonging to the both of us? Go for it, if she says yes then I'll consider the possibility. But make no mistake, if you think you can take her away from me you'll have a fight on your hands."
"Then we've come to an agreement. Be prepared Yusuke for I have no intentions of failing in this, when I get her to agree then you'd have better disposed of all your reservations." Finished with the conversation Hiei stood, taking his leave from the Detective. One thing was for certain, the apparition fully intended on intercepting Kagome before Yusuke had a chance to. While the man had all but dared him to proceed on this current course, Hiei wouldn't put it past him to attempt interfering. A quick search for the woman's energy had her nearing her home. It wouldn't take more than a couple of minutes for him to make it to the location, more than likely at the same time that she arrived.
Kagome had just put the key in the lock and opened the door when a chill went down her back, forcing her to turn around. Fortunately it was a feeling she'd grown used to and knew before she laid eyes on him that Hiei had made an appearance. "Oh hello Hiei, would you like to come in?" She wasn't sure exactly what he was doing there but she wasn't going to be impolite forcing him to remain on the porch. Quickly she stepped inside with the apparition following closely behind her and shut the door, stopping only to kick off her shoes. While she was slightly unnerved that Hiei had yet to say anything Kagome knew that was just the way he tended to be and only once he was ready would he reveal just why he was there. "Can I get you anything to drink?"
Seeing her beginning to pick up the bags she'd set down just inside the doorway, Hiei moved to help her take them into the kitchen. "Not at this time." As much as he disliked the idea Hiei knew that he would have to proceed with caution. If he moved too quickly with her feelings of guilt would come up since she was still attached to Yusuke. It would also compound the problem of her thinking all she was good for was releasing sexual tension. There had to be a happy medium that he could work with though he knew it was going to take some time. Setting the bags down on the kitchen floor he looked at the girl in question,"Where do these go?"
Kagome wasn't sure what to think of the question as she directed him on where things went, putting up her own items at the same time. Seeing Hiei being so.... helpful was unusual and she was afraid to ask just what brought this particular turn of attitude on. Most of the time he was aloof at best and couldn't be bothered to lift a finger to help someone unless it benefited him in some fashion. Before long everything was put away, leaving them to look at each other rather uncomfortably. "Thank you for the help, I must say it was a pleasant surprise."
"It was nothing." Turning around Hiei walked into the moderately furnished living room with her following closely behind. Curiosity was radiating from her gaze and it nearly had him chuckling in amusement. She truly was oblivious to the interest she stirred but that would change soon enough. As she sat down on the couch he took a seat next to Kagome much to her surprise.
Now the apparition really was beginning to worry her, he was voluntarily sitting on the couch next to her? Not only that but he was now close enough that Kagome could feel the warmth radiating off of him. Giving the apparition a tentative smile she decided to ask the question burning in her mind. "Not that I'm complaining any but, why exactly are you here? I think this is the first time you've come here without one of the others."
"Because I wish to be." Let her sit there and wonder what his true purpose for being there was. She'd find out soon enough, though he doubted she'd object once she became accustomed to the idea. Humans and demons alike released a pheromone when they came into contact with a member of the opposite sex, one that expressed whether or not they found the other attractive. It wasn't something that was done on a conscious level but with his superior sense of smell Hiei easily recognized it. Whether Kagome knew it yet or not her body was receptive to his advances, he just had to overcome the hurdles that had been placed in his path to get her to realize it as well. Wanting to see what she would do the apparition leaned a bit closer to her and as he expected, her heart rate sped up slightly.
"Oh... okay then." Why couldn't she get a straight answer out of the male gender for once in her life? Kagome just stared at him for a moment before sinking back into the cushions unsure of what to say next. Perhaps the man needed a place to stay? The idea wasn't all that impossible though she figured her apartment would have been one of the last places he would have chosen. Certainly Yusuke or Kurama had far more room though it wasn't near as quiet. Perhaps that was it, he just didn't want to come right out and ask her. It was either that or he was killing time and obviously he wasn't about to tell her which it was. "Well you're welcome to stay if you want, I've got things I have to do around here so I should probably get to it." Yes, housework would more than likely keep her mind off of the silent demon sitting on her couch. If only it could get her mind off of the rest of her problems.
XxXxXxXxXxXx
The phone rang five times before it was finally picked up much to Yusuke's displeasure. After Hiei had left he'd debated calling her right away but decided against it, still believing that the apparition was just trying to needle him once more. So he'd waited a while, giving the hybrid plenty of time to show up at Kagome's so he could ask her if he'd ever made an appearance. "Damn Kagome I was wondering if you were ever going to pick up." Yusuke leaned against the back of the couch, randomly flipping through channels with the remote.
"Well excuse me Yusuke I was in the middle of doing something when you called!" Kagome wasn't in any mood to deal with his snappish attitude at the moment as she tried to make it to the couch without killing herself. The day had been spent finishing the housework she hadn't gotten done the day before due to Hiei's impromptu appearance and she'd just about finished mopping the floor when Yusuke had called. Unfortunately the apparition had left only an hour ago after spending the night on the couch so she couldn't call out to him to bring the receiver to her. Unfortunately with the floor still wet when she'd tried to rush to grab it before the person hung up she slipped, twisting her ankle in the process. It was only a sheer miracle she'd managed to grab the phone before they'd hung up and now to be bitched at only put her in a worse mood.
Yusuke pulled the phone away from his ear and stared at it when she'd snapped at him. "Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning, What's your problem?" Maybe Hiei had shown up after all and done his speech, proclaiming his decision to her. Yusuke could almost picture the apparition taking her hand and saying You are my woman, you have no choice in the matter! Of course the best part of that mental image was when his girl friend shot the hybrid down saying not in a million years. The thought was interrupted by Kagome snapping at him once more causing him to scowl.
"My problem? My problem right now is you Yusuke. I twist my ankle trying to get to the phone in time and the first thing out of your mouth is a complaint about how long it took for me to pick up. Excuse me for trying to do something while I'm home, alone, again because you can't be bothered to call me half the time." Wincing, Kagome began moving over to the couch trying to balance on one foot while holding the phone. Why couldn't he ever call her except when she was busy? It did no good to call him because half the time he was never home.
Yusuke sighed then, he hadn't been calling her to pick a fight but things had been rather strained between them since she'd last been over to his place. "Look I didn't mean to snap at you alright. I was just calling to see how you were and ask if maybe you wanted to go out later tonight but if you hurt yourself maybe that's not a good idea. Kuwabara mentioned that he'd gotten tickets to a dinner show and he's planning on taking Yukina. He wanted us to come as well." Wanted wasn't strong enough of a word, Kuwabara didn't want to step in the place but since it was for Yukina he really had no choice. As such he'd called in a favor from Yusuke, figuring if he had company then the girls might not notice if they stepped out for a while. Unfortunately Yusuke had already given his word that he'd go and now he couldn't back out whether Kagome went or not. "You really need to be more careful you know. One of these days you're going to fall and actually break something."
"Like I need the reminder." Kagome leaned against a wall and peered down at her ankle which was already swelling before sighing heavily. "I doubt I'm going to be able to go. I'm having a hard enough time even getting to the couch much less traipsing around town, sorry." Why did the couch have to be so far away? Even worse was that she'd have to brave the floor again to get ice for her injury before making her way back out to the living room.
It would seem that Yusuke was doomed to suffer through the entire evening at a show he had no desire to go to. If he hadn't have given his word already he'd be calling up Kuwabara and telling him that he'd changed his mind. "Alright if you're sure. Give me a call later tonight if you want, if we don't get in too late I might stop by." Maybe he'd ask Yukina if she could take a look at Kagome's ankle. That was a sure way to get back in her good graces at least, maybe then they could go and do something over the weekend.
"Yeah sure, have fun tonight alright?" Slowly Kagome began hopping back across the room when she heard the front door open which had her turning in surprise nearly upsetting her balance once again. "Dammit!" Kagome swore when she instinctively stepped down on her injured foot once more to keep from falling. Pain shot up her leg nearly bringing tears to her eyes as she cursed under her breath. "Yusuke I gotta go, I'll talk to you later." Hearing a muffled goodbye she ended the call wishing she could toss the damned phone across the room.
As Hiei closed the door behind him the girl's shout of pain had him moving quickly towards the living room. He wasn't sure what had happened but it was a good bet that Yusuke had something to do with it since it was the detective she was speaking to on the phone. While she wasn't the most graceful of human's Kagome wasn't in the habit of tripping over her own feet without reason either. He'd known the girl had seen him as he came into the room so thankfully it didn't startle her when he appeared by her side and reached out to steady her before any more damage was done.
Kagome was given just enough time to do as the apparition instructed before he picked her up off of the floor and carried her over to the couch. As he gently set her down on the couch and then knelt down beside her Kagome could only stare at the man. "Thanks Hiei, I guess I really am too clumsy for my own good." The behavior the demon was exhibiting was strange, she would have figured he'd have snorted and left her to her own devices before carrying her over to the couch.
"I'll reserve judgment until you tell me what happened." Carefully Hiei examined the rapidly swelling flesh, gently manipulating her foot trying to determine just how much damage was done. Her hiss of pain told the apparition that the touch was exceedingly painful but it didn't seem as if anything were broken. "You'll survive, I'd suggest not walking on it for a few days unless you have no choice." Though he wasn't going to tell her, this was a convenient opportunity for him which could only work to his advantage. It was doubtful Yusuke would come rushing over to tend to the girl which meant the door was left wide open for Hiei to show a side of himself that was rarely exposed. "Wait here, I'll get you some ice. Once the swelling is down I can better evaluate the damage that's been done."
"There's one already made in there, inside the freezer door. I'm... kinda used to things like this so I always have one handy." Kagome blushed at this, waiting for a scathing comment that never came. It wasn't as if she could help how often she got injured unless she decided to not go outside the house again. It had only been after a kid on roller blades had plowed into her just outside the apartment complex that Kagome finally decided it was better to be prepared. There was a problem when she couldn't even step out her front door without worrying just what was going to happen to her. The only consolation that she had was at least demons were no longer after the jewel. The damned artifact had finally been destroyed before she'd returned to her own time for good.
Hiei couldn't help but wonder how much it would unnerve the girl if she knew just how much of her life he was aware of. One could almost say he'd taken to stalking her though that put him in an unfavorable light which would never do. Still, he was well aware of most of the things that happened while she was home alone, the only time he broke off his surveillance was when other matters demanded his attention or Kagome was with Yusuke. Watching the two of them together made the jealousy he'd buried deep within flare to life. "I'll find it," Hiei said as he walked into the kitchen and began looking through the freezer. The pack was located easily enough and within moments the apparition was back at the couch placing it on her injured limb. "So are you going to tell me how this happened or not?"
"This is going to sound stupid but I was mopping the floor and slipped when I tried to get to the phone," Kagome sighed as she thought about it, next time she'd just let the damned thing ring and deal with the consequences later. Kagome hissed as the cold pack came into contact with her bared skin and the urge to pull away from it was strong even though she knew that it was supposed to help the pain. However the warmth radiating from the hand that was supporting her ankle was decidedly nice she realized . It was enough to distract her slightly from the discomfort she was experiencing.
Hiei resisted the urge to smirk as he sensed the change in her demeanor. Keeping his eyes on what he was doing, the apparition slid his hand a couple inches further up her calf feeling the muscle tense beneath the skin. "Relax, the more you tense the worse it will hurt." Using her discomfort as an excuse he gently began to caress the skin as he massaged her leg. A quick glance up gave him a glimpse of her stunned expression but he could tell by the way she was melting into his touch she was enjoying what he was doing. More than once he'd heard Yusuke mention taking care of her when she'd become injured but he was willing to bet the man didn't go to such lengths. The Detective was definitely going to end up learning a thing or two about making a woman feel appreciated by the time Hiei was finished showing him what Kagome needed.
Wondering what had spurred this demonstration of concern was a natural occurance for Kagome but she wasn't about to question it. The apparition was probably only helping her out due to his friendship with Yusuke but at the moment she wasn't complaining. Her eyes slid closed as he continued to work on her leg, wondering where he'd gotten that much skill with his hands. Hell, she'd been to professionals that just weren't that good. "You're hired, I'll pay whatever you want just don't stop." Kagome giggled slightly as his hands stilled for a moment before resuming their motions. Damn what she wouldn't have given for a massage like this last week after a long day at the office. Being a customer service representative wasn't exactly fun work and most days she came home with a killer headache brought on by the stress from the office. This would be a perfect way to unwind.
"I take it Yusuke doesn't do this often then?" Hiei kept the slight amusement in his voice to keep the girl from thinking he was attacking her boyfriend, knowing that would be counterproductive to what he wanted to accomplish. Besides, it gave him a better idea of what she wanted but wasn't getting. Even though Kagome may not realize it, the apparition was more than enjoying the opportunity to touch her like this. While there wasn't anything about it that could be taken the wrong way it let him know just how comfortable she was around him. The largest hurdle besides Yusuke would indeed be her shyness issues.
Kagome opened her eyes to stare at the man like he'd lost his mind before laughing. "Oh please, Yusuke's idea of a massage is rubbing for two minutes before yanking his shirt off and saying my turn." Of course the man made up for it in other ways, such as he was fun to be around when they weren't having an argument. At times it really did seem like he cared about her but other times she remained doubtful. What could she expect though? Men just weren't as open with their feelings.
Though Hiei wasn't surprised by what she'd said it wasn't a line of thinking he could necessarily understand. If the woman was to be thought of as attractive why wouldn't a man want to put his hands on his mate or in this case, lover? More to the point though was how could Yusuke not see what was going on right in front of him? More than once when he'd observed the man with Keiko he'd thought that the Toushin suffered from some serious blind spots when it came to a relationship however he had to admit that he wasn't exactly an expert. Kagome was the first person he'd seriously thought of anything more than a quick rut with which didn't really make sense to him either. She was overly cheerful with a temper that easily matched his when provoked, had no real fighting skills with the exception of her holy powers so it continued to baffle him on just what it was that drew him to the girl. Fixing her with a look, Hiei raised an eyebrow at her, "I certainly hope you don't give in then."
Unsure of what to say to the apparition Kagome looked down at her hands. Hiei would probably call her stupid for doing so but she did enjoy making others happy and if Yusuke really wanted it then giving him a rub down wasn't too much trouble. At least he put forth something of an effort for her right? Kagome looked up when Hiei stopped once again, peering at her waiting for an answer. "Well...."
"And here I thought Yukina was the self sacrificing one of the group. Why do you allow him to walk all over you?" Had he not have seen her in action on numerous occasions when someone had pissed her off, Hiei would have believed that the girl didn't have a backbone. However that was decidedly not the case with this particular human, it was only in certain instances with one individual in particular that it appeared. While he had noticed it, as had Kurama they both had come to the conclusion that Yusuke wasn't even aware of the roles they had fallen into with each other. Shaking his head, Hiei removed his hands from her leg completely and pulled away the ice pack much to Kagome's surprise. "Turn over, carefully."
"What? Why?" The command stunned her for a moment but as Hiei stood there impassively looking down at her, Kagome decided to comply. He hadn't tried anything strange with her yet and she did trust the apparition. It was awkward flipping over without jarring her leg too much but eventually she accomplished it, pulling one of the soft pillows beneath her head and then turning to look at him. An eyebrow raised slightly when she watched him yank his cloak off and set it over the coffee table. "If you're hot you can turn the air conditioner on, the panel is over on that wall." If she'd been able to walk Kagome would have done it herself but as it was she could only gesture towards it.
Normally Hiei wouldn't have bothered to answer the question, thinking it was more than obvious just what he was doing but it looked as if he were going to have to spell it out for her. "Don't worry about my comfort, just relax. It's time you let someone else take care of you for a change." For instances like this it would have been better if he could have straddled the girl's hips but with the couch being so small and Kagome being uncertain Hiei knew he was just going to have to make due with the floor once more. Kneeling down next to her, his hands immediately set to work on her shoulders seeking out the problem spots first. A low groan told the apparition he'd found the first of many. By the time he was finished most likely she'd be asleep but that was fine with him, there was someone he needed to see that afternoon anyway.
As the apparition continued to work Kagome decided the only thing that could possibly make this feel any better would be if she were to press a bottle of lotion into his hands and strip off her shirt. However that would far overstep the lines of decency with the man and probably shock him speechless. Kagome couldn't imagine how his opinion of her would sink then, it was best to just enjoy what she had at that particular moment. The man's warm hands slid even further down her back, hitting a rather sensitive area causing her to gasp.
Frowning slightly at the mass of knots he found, Hiei took the chance to slide his hands beneath her shirt though he kept them centered over the problem area as he worked. When no objections came the apparition relaxed slightly, he'd almost been certain Kagome was going to ask him what the hell he thought he was doing. Instead she seemed to melt further into the couch, the sounds coming from her signaling how much she was enjoying it.
Kagome's eyes slid closed as he continued to work. It was almost as if she'd died and gone to heaven or it was some sort of dream. Either way she didn't want it to stop. The phone rang once more, causing Hiei to pause but she shook her head. "Let it ring, they can call back later." Really, Kagome didn't want to have to deal with anything right now other than what was currently going on in her living room. Eventually the ringing stopped to her delight and she relaxed even further."I'm serious Hiei, you're hired. You can have whatever you want, just name it."
"I'll take that under consideration," Hiei replied, his voice low and husky though the girl didn't seem to notice. Instead she sighed in contentment, her breathing gradually becoming deeper as she drifted off into sleep. Still he continued to rub until there was no chance of her waking. His finger tips lingered for a moment longer, tracing over her skin before sliding out from underneath the material. Just before Hiei stood he brushed a few errant strands of hair away from her face and caressing her cheek. "Sleep for now, I will return shortly." Standing quietly, Hiei stretched out his own stiff muscles before retrieving his cloak and going over towards the phone. A quick look at the caller id had proven that whoever had called wasn't anyone he'd deem important. Shutting off the ringer he replaced it on the stand before walking out the front door. Kurama might not have been available to talk earlier that day but now he'd make the time for what Hiei needed to know.
Author's Note: I do like Yusuke, I really do. Don't ask me what the hell my muse is thinking, I'm really not sure what to think of this at the moment lol Thank you to everyone who chooses to review.
