Forgiveness Is A Last Resort

Snape couldn’t help but sneer at the once-proud man that stood in front of him now, nearly begging to be admitted entrance. Lucius Malfoy had lost everything to the war. His money, his wife, his position beside He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, and now he was begging Snape to save his son. That was already the goal of the mission but Lucius didn’t know that, not yet.

“Get in here, man. Pull yourself together.” Snape slammed the door closed behind the blonde wizard and retrieved a glass of brandy which was quickly sucked down. The Potions Master winced. Apparently Malfoy had also become an alcoholic. Wonderful. The blond collapsed onto a chair without asking, but Severus wasn’t sure his legs would hold him up any longer. Long, aristocrat fingers twitched uncontrollably around the glass and in the grimy hair Lucius tried to pull back from his face.

“Oh, god, Severus you need to help me- please. I’ll do anything you need, anything. I just don’t want my son to die, not like this-“ It was clear there was nothing left of the man worth saving, he had been reduced to begging, pleading for the life of his son. Severus was disgusted. His once quicksilver eyes had faded to the simple grey of hopelessness.

“By Merlin, man is this what the house of Malfoy has fallen to? Rags and a beggar’s pleading?”

“I don’t care what happens to me anymore, Severus, please. I know you can’t forgive me but forgive my son- he can still help you, can still help Potter.”

“He won’t be returned to you-“

Lucius snarled, attempting to lunge out of the chair and at Severus but he only ended up on the floor, sprawled with one arm out toward the embodiment of his last hope. “I don’t care, don’t you get it! Just get him out of that hell-hole!”

Severus looked down his nose and for a long moment the only sound in Spinner’s End was Lucius’ harsh breathing.

Finally Severus spoke: “Tell me what you know.”
