In the end, Harry gave in because she would be the least suspected. And because she was the only one who had thought to help herself to a number of Snape’s old Potions supplies from the dungeons. And because she had basically nagged him into it.
And so it was that Hermione found herself in Borgin and Burkes in the guise of an old woman. An old woman that, as far as Hermione knew, was still asleep on the muggle park bench where they had found her, although minus some of her hair.
She gazed calmly into the gaunt face of Mr. Borgin as he stammered. “I…I don’t have what you require, Madam. Really” he lowered his voice and leaned across the counter to whisper to her, his breath rancid with onions, “you should be very careful in asking for that stuff at all! Ministry controls are tighter than ever-“
“Yes” she said coldly, in her scratchy, old-woman’s voice. “And I know, Borgin, that if anyone still has a supply, you do. Name your price and mind your business.” She jingled a bag in front of him.
Borgin reacted to the bag like one of Pavlov's dogs. He licked his lips and cast a shifty eye at the front of his shop before sidling to the door and carefully hanging a sign on it that read CLOSED FOR LUNCH. He disappeared into a room behind the front counter, while Hermione smiled grimly and swigged from a battered leather flask bearing the Malfoy crest. Mundungus really was a genius. Borgin’s eyes had widened when she had lifted it to her lips before making her request. The flask was her ticket of admission even more than the money was.
“Here” he said, hurrying out of the back. He set a square, black bottle on the counter. “ I assume you do have the Pensieve? The retrieval potion will not work without traces of the original fluid.”
“I do”. It was another thing she had thought to take. She dumped the bag of Galleons on the counter and waited. Borgin picked up one of the coins and bit it, his eyes narrow, and nodded.
As she left, the last thing Hermione heard Borgin say was “Be careful, Madam. Poking around in another person’s memories can do funny things to your own. You don’t want Severus Snape inside your head.”
