The blade felt cold against his skin. He tugged at the ropes binding his arms over his head. The knife ran down on his naked chest, pressing just hard enough to let a small trail of blood escape. It didn’t really hurt. The pain was minimal compared to what he had suffered in Azkaban. But Lucius knew this was some sort of foreplay, it would not last. Voldemort wanted more from him. He wanted real penance; proof that he was not a traitor.

Voldemort snickered. Lucius was a fool thinking he could get away from him. He had gone to a lot of trouble to get him out of Azkaban. And now he was going to pay for his insolence. He pressed the knife deeper into Lucius’s stomach, stealing a gasp of pain from his prisoner.

Lucius watched as the Dark Lord raised the blade to his lips and licked the blood. Suppressing a moan of disgust, he diverted his gaze, only to see Wormtail in the far corner, holding out a tray of different sized vials. He finally understood just how serious his Master was.

“Now Lucius”, drawled Voldemort, “I understand that accidents happen. But not when it comes to bloody Potter. I cannot tolerate it. I have already forgiven you once.”

“Master, it wasn’t my fault. They were so many and -”

Voldemort slashed his cheek with the knife. Blood trickled down his face.

“I will not tolerate failure.”

“But…”

Voldemort stabbed him swiftly across the chest, leaving a deep cut. Lucius felt the pain run through his stomach. The warmth of his own blood running down his body was nauseating.

“Wormtail?”

The vermin came forth and placed his tray on a small table near the Dark Lord. He bowed deeply and exited the room.

“Now, Lucius, here is my final task for you. Here are a dozen potions. They will all save you, one way or another.”

Lucius looked up to his Master, and blinked in incomprehension.

“Prove that you are devoted to our cause.”

Voldemort moved towards the door. Before leaving, he waved his wand, untying the restraints, with a half smile.

Lucius was alone, lying on the floor in his own blood. He could see the small vials on the table. Next to them, he saw the knife. He knew what was expected of him. He tried to get up, knocking the tray over. Bottles crashed on the stone floor. He stumbled forward and grabbed the knife.

He raised the blade to his neck, and with a swift movement, cut the skin, letting blood flow free.
