I am really enjoying your fics. I have such a hard time writing even a drabble...keeping a story going through these challanges takes talent. Thank you for sharing.
hair hanging in a bedraggled mess around his chin while the longer strands still managed to cling to the thin band that held them back.
:D Thanks. I thought it would be very difficult to keep a story and match the challeneges, but to be honest, there would be no story without them. They drive the plot ^^. I think it would be harder to come up with a new plot idea every week. I'm glad you're enjoying.
To be honest, little drabbles are very difficult for me. 100's I can do sometimes but 200 or 300 words is no man's land between story and scene. It's like swimming. 100's I'm good, 500 is great, but 200 is just long enough that I die at 150 but short enough that you're suppose to sprint the whole thing.
I have not tried to write anything in fandom over 200 words. I'm nervous enough about trying to get characterizations right, keeping my ideas as much within canon as possible.
I love reading the 30 minute fics. One day I'm going to be brave enough to jump in and give it a try.
I think I'm still scarred from my 6th grade English teacher who told me my writing was "too pedestrian".
I was afraid of characterizations at first too so when I jumped into fandom headfirst with a multi chapter fic, I made sure it was post-graduation mid-war and that how the characters acted 'now' was somewhat beliveable based on what they had been through. From there it was just a matter of reading and re-reading fics I felt were spot on for characters and asking readers what they thought of mine.
I am currently under the belief that 'English' teachers are not the best to teach writing. Grammar, yes, but not style and consistancy for writing.
I would suggest sticking to something post-Hogwarts. If you like to stick with cannon than doing something AU would probably annoy you a bit seeing as AU is completly different than the cannon world. (hence, A.U.) If you do something post-hogwarts, though, than readers tend (from my experiance) to give you a bit of leway in characters depending on how long after school the story is set. Younger characters(graduates and younger siblings) have a penchant for a lot more change than say Dumbledore or Snape, but again, if several years have passed than hinting at severe experiances gives the reader the idea that something happened to make them act this little bit differently. Now they just need to keep reading to figure out what that event was.
I, on the other hand, am not that strict in regards to cannon mostly because I have no hope at all of remembering what happened. My first draft of Triple Deception had Sirius spelling windows into walls.... despite the fact that he is well and truely dead (for all intents and pourposes) in book
( ... )
What I lack in writing, I try to make up in icons *grin*!
I have been collecting links to canon resources and making friends with some writers who are canon goddesses...hopefully that will payoff when I grow the balls to write something beyond a drabble. Not that I want to be overly strict with myself, just that I don't want to write something completely off that throws readers out of the story.
guh! I've seen that one too. Might I ask for the link to the full image if you have it? I've been wanting to see it for some time now.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I've always been sort of gung-ho when it comes to my writing, though. :D As much as I enjoy feedback and constructive critiscism, I'm happy if I can just write.

This is such a vivid image.
