He was Chinese; she was Japanese. She barely knew her country’s history and what it did to his country! If he told himself that, it became easy to hate her. Just as it had been easy to hate Eugene and Oliver.
His grandmother had once told him that it was draining to hate someone. Hatred, she’d told him, will drain you physically, mentally, and emotionally, and leave you a dried up husk that’s unable to feel anything for anything or anyone. He would agree, it was tiring and stupid to continue hating. There was really nothing wrong with Taniyama Mai. If anything, she was a figure to be pitied-orphaned at such a young age and she didn’t even have Eugene and Oliver’s luck to be adopted by a couple that loved them dearly. So why did he continue his self-imposed hatred of her? It was tiring-just like his grandmother had promised. Because it was hard to forget the atrocities. But it wasn’t fair to lay blame on her; it wasn’t fair to hate her because of where she’d been born; she’d said so herself. And he couldn’t help but agree with her.
Besides, it was exhausting to hate her when he was slowly but surely falling in love with the courageous girl.
