The snow outside was falling softly into a blanket that would cover the world in a cold white embrace. Inside the broken down building that was not even fit for habitation on a sunny day, Edward and Noah were huddled together in an effort to keep warm. At this point their clothes were rags barely hanging upon their bodies. During this season it would be difficult to get someone to give them shelter, much less durable clothing to keep the chill away.
There was no furniture lying around that could start a fire so they hadn't built one. Twilight came through the busted glass of the windows as Noah whimpered. Edward looked down and received the first glimpse of her hands that he'd seen all day. Normally they were hidden underneath the tattered shaw she pulled around her shoulders, but he got a glimpse of them now and they were bare.
"Noah, why didn't you tell me?" Edward asked, concern alarming his voice.
"I didn't want you to give up your gloves for me."
He enveloped her cold hands with his own slightly warmer ones. His eyes darted around again to look for something that could be used for a fire.
"Even paper would do..." Noah muttered, her own eyes looking as his were doing.
That was it! Edward had forgotten what he carried in the pack with their meager supplies. Buried in the bottom of it was a book on alchemy which they'd found in a used bookstore a couple of weeks ago before the weather had turned to bitter cold. Quickly he dug in the bottom of his pack, pulling the book out along with two pieces of flint. Laying the book open in the old fireplace, Edward quickly struck the rocks together until a spark fell upon the page and hungrily began to consume it.
"Edward!" Noah cried out, thinking more of his loss than her warmth.
"I would rather lose that book. I can get it back if it is gone."
Edward sat beside Noah as she held her freezing hands toward the fire. They knew that this fire wouldn't last through the night, but if only for a brief moment they could be like this before the cold overpowered them once more. After the last embers died, Noah suggested that they could curl up together in the far corner and use their own body heat to try and survive the night.
Noah smiled. "Remember that it's always darkest before dawn, Edward."
