"Have I ever thanked you before for anything?" Kurogane inquires one day.
"What ever would you need to thank me for, Kuro-puu?" Fai replies, puzzled.
Kurogane pauses, unsure of what he wants to say next. He had expected Fai to say something that would drop the subject, quickly yet satisfyingly. Now, he realizes that the mage isn't as predictable as he once was. Finally, he says slowly, "For... changing me. Yeah. I don't think I ever thanked you."
They both know the path they took to get here was twisted, dark and best left forgotten, and they know that they have held each other's scarred hearts and mended them as carefully as they could, and finally broke the walls they built between them and the illusions they made themselves to be. They still remember how it felt, and how it feels now as Fai takes the ninja by the hand and squeezes it tightly.
"You don't have to thank me for that until the end," Fai says after a few more moments of silence. "And, clearly, our journey isn't over. I hope it will never be over. So many days for us still remain, and there are still all kinds of little wonders to discover."
