#25 defeat

Sanji had fought for days for the honor of naming her, after it became apparent that, no, they weren't offloading her at the next port.

Zoro called her Merry -"Because she's always smiling" - and Usopp quickly agreed, saying it was a fitting tribute.

Sanji had set out to find something better with the fanatical devotion he typically reserved for cooking.

“Rose.”

“No.”

“Rose is a beautiful name!”

“You’re not naming her after a flower.”

“Bella.”

Zoro just looked at him, juggling the baby and her bottle.

“Angel.”

“What the hell is wrong with Merry?”

“You can’t name a baby after a dead ship, moron.” Sanji chewed viciously on his tooth pick, flipping through a baby names book he’d picked up from somewhere.

Zoro rolled his eyes, looking down at the infant. “Ignore him, he’s an idiot.”

She cooed, hands waving in the air as she ate.

Sanji glared at him. “Picking her name will define the rest of her life; you can’t pick one so impulsively.”

“Merry is a good name.”

“Merry is a horrible name.”

“Usopp likes it.”

“Usopp is besotted with the idea of naming the baby after his ship.”

“Like any of your choices are better. Yesterday you wanted to name her ‘Princess’.”

“Well, she is.” Sanji returned his attention to the book with a final glare. “Rai-”

“MERRY-CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!”

Zoro unconsciously shielded the baby against his chest, staring at their rubber captain. Luffy was holding a scrap of tangled yarn with utmost seriousness. He even seemed to be making an attempt to not be loud now that he was in the kitchen and not just flying through the door like a missile.

Luffy handed him the scrap of yarn, and now that he looked at it, it did look like the knotting was deliberate. “Usopp helped me make Merry a scarf, Zoro.” His Captain nodded very seriously and walked back out of the kitchen.

Zoro managed to not look at Sanji by sheer force of will. “Well, I guess that’s decided.”

Behind him, Sanji made a sound somewhere between a groan and a sob.

#22 vegetables

Merry was reaching for his plate.

Zoro looked down at her thoughtfully, stroking her hair. She'd just had a bottle, it wasn't likely she was hungry again so soon.

She reached for it again.

He thoughtfully mashed a bit of the baked squash with the edge of his spoon. “This what you want?”

That triggered a string of babble and another reach for the plate.

He glanced at the cook, still doing something on the stove. Sanji wanted to make a huge production out of her first solid foods.

Zoro smirked, lifted a tiny bit of the baked squash onto his spoon and offered it to the baby.

Merry opened her mouth for the spoon, making a pleased cooing sound reserved for when she got her way.

“What do you think?”

She burbled, waved her hands and tried to take the spoon.

“Pretty good, huh?”

“What are you doing, Moron? What did you give her?! She's too little! Chopper said wait another week!” Ah, so the cook had noticed he was up to something. Well, he hadn't really attempted to be sneaky. Sanji was far too willing to back down on things if the baby was involved.

“He said offer it to her if she reaches.” Zoro scooped up a bite of the squash and lifted it to his own mouth. “She did, and I gave her a taste of the squash. Which is on the list, cook.”

Sanji glared. “First meals-”

“Are not that big of a deal, you've been feeding her for months.”

Merry cooed and reached for the spoon again.

Sanji almost snarled, staring at the happy baby.

If looks could kill, they'd be burying Zoro's body at sea right now.

He felt a smile twist his lips.

He was looking forward to sparring with the cook later.

#27 hunger

"She won't eat, or stop crying, and she won't sleep either."

Chopper looked at the little girl with her fist stuffed in her mouth, eyes red and wide as she stared at him, then at her parent who had brought her down in a state of near panic.

He sighed softly, wondering if this was going to be another of those 'burping' conversations.

Zoro hovering behind him was starting to make him just a little nervous, but he carefully extracted the fist. "She's just trying to cut teeth, Zoro. She's going to be fine."

Her gums were a little swollen, and it probably didn't feel very good, but it was part of nature.

"You might have Sanji give her something frozen or put a little rum on her gums, it will numb them."

The horrified look that Zoro gave him told him that, yes, this was going to go just like the burping conversation.

"It's not enough to get her drunk, just enough to make them stop hurting."

Merry gave a tiny sob, sticking her fist back in her mouth.

Zoro shook his head. "What...but...isn't it bad for her?"

"It'll help numb her a little. It's not fun to get her teeth in."

Zoro was still looking at him like he was trying to poison the baby.

Chopper just sighed and promised he'd fix something up.

The bottle he gave Zoro was filled to the brim with rum.

Zoro didn't even ask what it was.
