One: Choices
Axel loved Roxas as much as his existence allowed him to, and sometimes more than should have been possible. They’d lie in bed at night and Roxas would breath steadily in his sleep, and Axel would find that he was too much a coward to say the words that he wanted to, but couldn’t. Even if Roxas couldn’t hear him, Axel was too scared that the words would swirl around and poison him if he ever dared to voice them.
So, it took him completely by surprise when he held Roxas tight against his chest one night, and laid his head on the other’s, and let the most terrifying of all words slip from his lips.
“I love you…” Axel felt as thought a huge weight had been lifted from his chest, at ease that Roxas had heard nothing, and now he would be able to sleep in peace. He’d been honest, or as honest as a non-existent with no heart could be, about something that was utterly impossible. He closed his eyes and just when he thought he had made it through safe and sound, Roxas stirred.
“What’d you say?” He mumbled, eyes fluttering open and looking at Axel, whose non-heart sunk into the pit of his non-soul. He shook his head and kept his eyes shut and his voice controlled.
“Nothing important. Just that I feel sorry for you.”
“Nn, alright.” Roxas was asleep again, and Axel sighed.
He didn’t think he’d ever really be free from that uncomfortable weight of impossibility, anyway.
