Remembrance
Hiei always knew that when he would be out of a fight, and everyone else would slip off in their different directions, that his memory would catch up with him. He could push forward and quickly far ahead as much as he wanted, but in the end…he would be trapped standing on his own shadow.
Yuusuke had always told him to get out from sitting in trees and socialize with everyone. Hiei would only -- could only -- allow himself to jump down and stand besides Yuusuke a few times. It wasn’t often, but oddly when he did join everyone, Yuusuke would smile.
There were times that Hiei still treasured that smile. Yuusuke sometimes would treat him different then the others; more affectionately. Hiei…liked it. He missed it.
Hiei didn’t get to here Yuusuke’s true voice around anymore. He wasn’t around. No arguing with Keiko, or picking small, joke fights with Kuwabara. The only way that Hiei could remind himself of the voice was from a small tape that he could play. It was originally of a recording from when Hiei was going to prove Yuusuke wrong; Kuwabara was even helping. But they both got caught and Yuusuke tackled them both to the ground, then began wrestling with Hiei alone. Playfully. And kissed him. ...The only downside of the moment was Kuwabara was still there.
Hiei smiled faintly. The memory would always come back. He’d stand in the shadows, cassette-player loosely in hands, listening to the old voice of the one who made him learn to love. And then he would fight again, for the memory of what once was.
