The mirror didn't help any. Jet was pretty sure, based on the other kinds of...changes...that what he was looking for was inside his head, not inside his ear. The baby had been going on about how amazing Jet was, that they'd used unique kinds of equipment on him. He REALLY didn't care. The first time he has to interact with an infant, and the thing can speak into his mind and has the vocabulary of those bratty college kids.

The only real information he'd gotten from the kid was that he was special the same way the old guy was, where as the kid and the girl were closer in type. Something about "subtle inner changes versus drastic, physically altering changes". Whatever that meant.

"Mind if I ask what you're doing?"

Jet blinked up at the other male in their group. He had greying hair and looked, somehow, even older than his, what, forty years? If he had to guess, Jet would bet the guy had been through something like him. Something you wanted to forget, but couldn't because life just wasn't fair. "I was looking for something."

"In your ear?"

"The kid said there was something in it that kept the...the..."

"Your ear from exploding because humans don't like noises that loud? Breaking the sound barrier can't be fun on a normal person."

Jet nodded slowly. That sounded about right. He'd zoned out amid the various equations, explanations, and large words. What the hell were kilohertz anyways? "You understood all that?"

"Most of it. The math was a little above my head, but it makes sense. Going that fast, you'd hear things differently than the rest of the world. It might even be damaging to your hearing, and what good are you to them deaf?"

"I don't care about being useful to them! I don't want to be useful to them! The more worthless I am, the better!" Jet was on his feet, glaring at the wall across from him. He winced as his ear started hurting again. He'd probably pulled on it too hard. Those stupid scientists were going to yell at him, probably knock him out.

"I don't think any of us would disagree, but think you could maybe stick around for a while anyways? The rest of us get lonely, hoping we're the only ones." Albert smiled sadly, shoving off the wall to stand next to Jet. "Just a little while longer?"

Jet sighed and rubbed his ear. "What choice to I have? Funny that a bunch of strangers would care more about my leaving than my folks did." Albert's smile faded, but he didn't speak. Guy had a way of noticing when topics weren't allowed. It was...nice. "We should get back to the others. Kid'll probably want to ramble on some more, and he prefers us in the same room. Less creepy, I guess."

Albert nodded, then leaned over and kissed Jet's ear. Jet stared at him. "You may not have had parents who looked after you, but a kiss is still supposed to make things better. Blame it on exhaustion if you need to." With that, the elder left the room.

Jet rubbed his ear gently, marveling at the other. Not that he'd tell him, but his ear did feel a little better. His mother, when he wasn't mad at her, he remembered her doing the exact same thing when he had ear aches from fluid in his ear canal. "Strange guy." Jet decided to leave this meeting out of the general information. He wasn't sure what he was going to do about it, but maybe it was a good thing. It wasn't like these guys could leave him, and things couldn't really get much worse. Maybe it was OK to get attached again, just a little, as long as they didn't know.
