The slender but good looking man with long red hair tied at the nape of his neck and gentle amiable eyes -the color purple- was known as Kenshin Himura. He was popular in school. All the girls loved him and the guys wanted to be him.
Yet, Kaoru could never understand his interest in an ordinary looking girl like her.
They never had any of the same classes together. In fact, both of their schedules were completely different. The guy had a future in kendo. He was good at school sports and aced every exam in every academic subject. Did she forget to mention that Kenshin was rich?
Kaoru, on the other hand, had long untidy black hair and pale blue eyes. She was sort of the loner at school. Although she chatted with people, especially her best friend Misao Makimachi, she preferred to be herself. When school was over, she packed her school books in her backpack and went straight home. She never stayed back to attend school clubs nor did she go to the parties that were held every weekend at some popular kid’s house. And most of the time at school, Kaoru lingered in the back of the class, hoping that no one noticed her.
But he did. Kenshin noticed her for a long time. For some weird reason, he was one of the first popular guys to approach her and talk with her. At first, Kaoru ignored him by using, “I have to go to class,” excuse. But he accosted her later, when she was putting her books away in her locker and was getting her lunch.
She was wary of him. She never liked how he looked at her from across the hallway and smiled as a form of greeting. In order not to offend him, Kaoru smiled in return and bowed a little. She didn’t want to get any of his fan girls on her case. The last thing she wanted to do was create enemies with people. So she looked the other direction and left him to hang out with his friends.
Then, he started to hang out in her favorite places such as her little hang out corner in the school library, or on the school roof during lunch time. He tried picking conversations with her while she tried her best not to yell at him.
And one day they had it out. The bubble Kaoru held, burst.
“Why are you following me?” she asked or more like almost screamed to his face.
He stood before her with a blank face and she got more irritated at him.
“Stop following me and trying to talk to me! Don’t you see I don’t want to have anything to do with you?” Kaoru heaved in deep breaths as her face flushed from anger.
With his blank face, he looked down at the floor. His red bangs concealed his eyes from her and she felt uncomfortable being unable to determine his feelings. It made him more of a mystery to her, which increased her anger.
“Look, you’re a popular guy in high school. You have popular friends and many fan girls who are dying to go out with you. Not that I’m saying you have any romantic interest in me. I know I am nothing but an insect to you. But if you’re trying to make my life a living nightmare by following or trying to get closer to me, then stop! Leave me alone. I never did anything to you.”
And he did something she did not expect. He raised his face to look at her and smiled his gentle smile.
Kaoru stepped back, fearing that his friends might jump out from behind him and attack her. But nothing of the sort happened. Instead, he took a step toward her.
Furthermore, he surprised her with his next words. “I apologize for making you upset. Please, believe me when I say that I didn’t mean you any harm when I tried on more then one occasion to talk with you. I just wanted to talk with you. I would have liked it if we became friends.”
She stared at him dumbfounded. He was polite to her. A guy like him, a superstar at school, was being gentle to a no one like her. Where were the crude jokes where the popular kids played on the losers, geeks, and nerds? Did she not fit in any of the categories?
“No I wouldn’t be cruel to you.” Unknowingly, he answered her question. “Even if you did something to me or said something about me, I wouldn’t be cruel to you, Kaoru.”
She exhaled a breath while the anger left her. One part of her wanted to believe his words, while another part remained precarious of the red headed guy.
Finally, she couldn’t take this crap with him anymore. If he wanted to play some cruel prank, then let him. She was tired of always looking over her shoulder. “Why?”
“Because you’re different,” he answered simply.
Of all answers, it stunned her to think he would actually say something like that to her.
“There are so many people in this school. But each and every one of them wants to get close to me for their own benefit. You’re different, because you’re not like that. Every time I talk with you, in a respectful way you keep your distance. And it makes me interested in you.”
Kaoru remained stunned while listening to him.
“You’re different from other girls. They stick to me like glue, in hopes, to get the chance to be popular. They listen to my every word. But it’s not like they mean it -being my friend. The world I come from is unreal. Most people hang around me to gain some benefit.”
He didn’t have to explain anymore. She knew how he felt, because she felt the same way about other people.
Kenshin Himura was a someone whereas she was a no one. Yet, the moment she smiled a true smile in his direction, a bond form between them, stronger then just friendship. It was something more.
