The day she turns ten, Mai resolves to do something about her feelings for Zuko. Blushing and looking away are things children do, and at ten she's practically a teenager.

The first thing she does when she gets up is not put the ribbons in hair and uses hair ties that won't show up, like a proper lady, instead. Then she bypasses the clothes she normally wears in her closet and goes for the an extra-fancy outfit she asked for earlier this year that were more befitting of someone her age as a trade for giving up learning how to cartwheel from Ty Lee. Then she gets out the makeup her mother bought her for going to a series of boring parties and remaining perfectly quiet and puts on just enough to accent her eyes, just like her mother taught her.

When Zuko shows up at her birthday party, going slightly pink as he shoves a present in her hand, she loses the nerve to kiss he cheek like she had planned, and instead grabs a chunk of his hair and pulls it, glad her mother isn't watching. Zuko looks baffled and she sticks out her tongue at him like an un-proper girl before running over to a giggling Ty Lee, a smile that showed her teeth that her mom never taught her how to do, on her lips.
