The moon was bright, filtering silver light into the small room. I could see her, even without turning on the hall light. Her slender form bent over the cradle, silvery hair keeping her face hidden as she rocked the cradle back and forth in a slow motion. She was humming; a soft tune and, every now and then, a few lyrics in French would escape her lips.

I stood, watching her in the sliver of moonlight. She was beautiful, even when she was standing there, worried and nervous from her lack of sleep. Even if she fought with me most mornings recently because of this. I didn’t mind.

I was in love.

After standing there long enough, I stepped inside the nursery, the floorboards creaking beneath my feet as she turned, her body straightening up slightly.

“Fleur?”

“I was afraid she’d stop breathing,” She whispered softly into the air, brushing a few long locks of hair away from her face. “They said she was so frail…”

I pulled my wife into am embrace, pressing my lips to her forehead. She relaxed against me, letting a sigh escape her body. My gaze went to the cradle, a smile tugging my lips.

“Go sleep, love,” I said to her softly, slowly parting from the embrace. “I’ll sit with Isabelle tonight.” She hesitated before I gave her a nudge with my hand, pressing her gently by the small of her back. “Go! We’ll be fine!”

I moved the rocking chair closer to the crib, settling in it as I turned my attention on Isabelle. Fleur hovered in the doorway for a few moments. “Goodnight…I love you,” Her voice faded away as I heard her feet against the wood floor as she left the room.

Trying to recall the tune, I hummed softly, brushing a red curl from the round features of my daughter.
