Severus sat hunched over a desk, quill moving quickly across the page, leaving his scrawled, tight print wounded upon the page. There was the usual bustle of activity from the others, girls giggling and discussing things in whispered tones to other's of their pack (Severus had concluded that females and wolves had more in common than just four limbs and a head), boys guffawed and tried to get the attention of girls, and a few overlooked it all from the pedestals. The Black sister's were holding court, and Rodolphus and Rabastan LeStrange were playing wizard's chess with Regulus Black, who was uncannily good at the game, as even Severus could only beat him 1 out of 3 times. There was a group of boys around them, carefully not paying attention to the girls.

Severus was apart from it all, in one of the quite corners, occasionally observing the little shifts in the group, especially the fringes of female and male where a number of interesting incidents were likely to occur, but mostly keeping his long nose aimed at the center of his book while his hand worked mechanically to finish an essay on the Defensive Properties of Preassembled Compounds in the face of attack. He was extolling the virtues of paralyzing powders when Bellatrix's voice called across the Common Room, "Rodolphus," she said, pitching her voice to be heard clear across the room, "Did I tell you I got a letter from Lucius?"

"No!" Rodolphus replied sitting back from a game he had clearly been loosing, and standing to cross to her. Bellatrix's court parted, and dispersed into the larger crowd that had formed, "What did he say, mia Bella?" the last words came out somewhat silkily as he took his seat to her left. Narcissa hadn't even made pretense to giving up her own seat to her right.

"Oh nothing too much…" Bellatrix said dismissively, "Merely that things are rather boring at home, and he is very much looking forward to the Holidays," she said, making reference to the Malfoy's yearly Christmas ball, "He says there will be many influential people there this year he wants me to meet…"

"It seems Lucius has gotten in with the right sort," Narcissa said as Bellatrix trailed off, "Father's been saying for years that big things were coming, that things were going to start changing soon for the better. He hinted over the summer such things were coming to a head," She sniffed and turned back to the book cradled in her lap, "Not that its my sort of business."

Bellatrix gave her sister a slightly condescending look, "No Narcissa its not."

"These people will be at the Party then?" Rodolphus asked dubiously.

"Well," Bellatrix said reasonably, "He didn't say they would, but he implied it."

"Who are they then?" Regulus asked, "These…important people."

Bellatrix sat up haughtily, "I'm sure if you're meant to find out, Regulus, you will." She glared at him, "No doubt they're only looking for the best right now."

"In other words," Severus said scathingly, from his corner, "Bellatrix doesn't know."

Bellatrix turned a frigid look to him, "And what do you know about it, Snape?"

"More than you I'll wager," Severus said, "And I find out more." he pulled out an envelope he had been using for a book mark and held it up in the dim light, "At the Party."

Bellatrix stared at him, "You…you're invited Snape?" she said and then sneered, "Oh. I see. Lucius ran low on house elves did he?"

A deadly silence descended on the room as Snape stood up, "No, Bellatrix," he said unfolding the letter. "Lucius seems to have merely decided that talent and intelligence is more important than full purses and empty heads."

Bellatrix flared, "So why'd he invite you?"

"Because he was told to…" Severus said turning to close his books and gather them up into his arms, letting those words hang in the ensuing silence. He turned back to the common room, "Now I'm going to finish these where there isn't so much absolute dragon dung tainting the air." He left without another word.

As he opened his door and slipped inside he tossed his books and mostly finished essay onto the bed before walking to one of the high set windows and tossing it open. He had no idea of who Lucius felt it was so important for him to meet. But he didn't have to admit that to Bellatrix. He glared at the high, bulbous moon and turned back to his room. He hadn't actually had any intention of going to Lucius' party this year. The older boy had been inviting him since second year, and three times Snape had turned him down. But now there was nothing for it.

He'd been tempted by Lucius' mentioning of, 'important, influential people' who had, 'shown great interest in' him and insisted that he 'be invited with out delay so proper introductions could be made.' Those words alone were enough to turn the Slytherin boy's head. After all, he was in fifth year and it wouldn't be long until he was facing a future where his Grandfather's account was no longer able to support him. That money would be gone as soon as Snape had finished preparing for 7th year, if he was lucky, and making connections now could ensure employment in the future.

Now, with every Slytherin expecting him to attend there was nothing to do but put in an appearance. He cursed silently and made a mental calculation of what this would cost. The present for the host and the dress robes alone…he cursed. There was nothing for it, and next Hogsmead weekend he'd have to get fitted for dress robes, and use his emergency funds to pay for them.

He opened his trunk and counted out the galleons.
